About this deal

We recently covered the best HDMI Switches here on PC Guide, and there is always some confusion as to what the difference is between Splitters and Switches. First, it’s a switcher with two input ports, so you can connect two media devices (streamer, DVD player, etc’) and switch between them (with a button, or with the supplied remote control). As ever we have tried to cover all budgets – not everybody has an endless supply of cash to spend on peripherals, so read our recommendations carefully before you decide which is the right HDMI Splitter for you. Our industry veterans know what they are talking about and how to cut through the jargon to make your job choosing the right machine as easy as possible. This kit comes with a combined HDMI extender/splitter that distributes 1x HDMI identical signal to 4x receivers via a network cable.

Distribute a Full HD HDMI signal to 4 displays over standard Cat 6 network cables, complete with HDMI loop and IR support. This is important when switching between devices, as there is a temporary break in the handshake until the newly selected device locks in with a new handshake. so it should be suitable for Sky Q), as well as Dolby Atmos and several other advanced audio formats (though the splitter is just a pass-through – you still need a device that can interpret these audio signals).

High performance multi-monitor hub that lets you connect up to three additional HDMI displays to a Windows PC or Laptop via a DisplayPort 1. Like most other media and data cables, the video signal on HDMI cables degrades over long distances. HDMI specifications, supporting resolutions up 4K30/ 4K50/60 4:2:0, High definition digital audio format.

There are no exact numbers here – but roughly speaking, 15 meters are considered the limit as far as good HDMI signals go. Just remember that the streams will be identical, so both TVs will show the same content coming from the same media device). That’s where an HDMI splitter comes in – it’s a small box that lets you plug in one “Input” device – that’s your streamer/ DVD Player/etc. And to top it all, it has an S/PDIF port, if you want to connect it to a digital audio device (and bypass the HDMI audio).A good HDMI splitter should be able to split a signal from one source and transmit it to multiple displays. The QU-12S Distribution Amplifier (splitter) accepts one HDMI input and splits this signal to two identical outputs. An HDMI Switcher is used to connect TWO DEVICES (or more) to one TV, and you switch between them with a button. Getting the top HDMI splitter for your needs is not just a question of build quality – it’s also a question of what your needs are, exactly. So while the only way to know for sure is to test your device, the splitter and your cables – I would generally suggest, if your other screen is more than 6-7 meters away, to get a higher-quality HDMI splitter and higher-quality HDMI cables, as that would help minimise the signal degradation.

An HDMI switcher gets around this, adding more ports by letting several devices share the same cable into your TV. HDMI is a digital signal and won't degrade in the same way as older analog signals, even with the addition of a switcher. You do pay less, sure, but with so few inputs (on opposite sides again, grrr) and the lack of a remote, this switch is best for smaller systems and small budgets. If your home entertainment setup is a bit more complicated than just one media device and two screens – the TESmart Splitter/Switcher will give you more options. However, even that will probably be too far for the top picture quality – especially if you’re planning to stream 4K video. Where it goes wrong is HDCP is rubbish, much like the majority of DRM it causes headaches for the legitimate end-user.

It extends 1x HDMI source to 4x HDMI displays over a single Cat6/7 cable up to 30m away from the source. The two main options are HD, which is a little cheaper, and 4K, also known as ultra HD, which gives a sharper picture. Ideal for use in high end 4K AV systems, this high performance 2 way splitter distributes a single HDMI source to two HDMI displays complete with EDID management to ensure the best connection.
