MEAGHAN: So this will probably be an unpopular opinion, but this shoe is a little too soft (maybe squishy is the better word) for me.

New Balance Fuelcell Rebel V2 Review New Balance Fuelcell Rebel V2 Review

Although it’s definitely better than the v2, for runs over 25km I would want more cushioning than the Rebel v3 offers.

The fit of the FuelCell Rebel v2 is wide enough through the mid and forefoot to accommodate most runners. The contrast between this expectation and the shoe’s actual (lack of) weight makes the Rebel v2 feel almost like a toy when you first pick it up.

Version 2 of the Rebel has been updated with a midsole that compresses more, is more flexible and has a softer outsole which makes the Rebel v2 more suited to slower paced, longer distance runs than V1. I think New Balance achieved exactly what they were aiming for: a trainer that appeals more to the mainstream. It is also not one of the classic lifestyle sneakers from the traditional American brand, but one of their running shoes that feature sport-specific material technology. In its well-intentioned attempt to enhance the cushioning feel of the Fuelcell foam, New Balance uses an extremely soft and thin lasting fabric under the removable insole. As a result, the first thing you notice when you pick up the Rebel v2 is that it’s unexpectedly lightweight. It excels at everything you pace it through - it's plush for easy recovery days and long runs, but exceptionally bouncy and peppy to pick up the pace in tempo sessions! The speed at which the foam springs back to shape after being compressed isn’t as fast as Nike’s ZoomX or Hoka’s ProFly+ so the ride feels more relaxed. He is also the chief tester for fitness trackers and running watches, treadmills and exercise bikes, and workout headphones. For trainers and performance trainers, we take them on daily runs, workouts, recovery runs and a long run prior to review (often accumulating anywhere from 20-50 miles in the process).

However, the tongue doesn’t move sideways during runs because of the ultra-wide flap that’s also asymmetrical to help it lock over the instep. On the bright side, the absence of an internal counter means that the collar is soft on the Achilles. New Balance said that their goal with the new version was to make it appeal to a wider group of runners, to make it 10 – 15% more democratic. The characteristic edge flare remains—though slightly muted—and ensures a visual resemblance to its predecessor. How would you compare these to the Brooks Hyperion Tempo – in terms of usage, stability and picking up the pace? The smooth transitions of the pinnacle underfoot cushioning experience are fine-tuned with updated midsole foam and enhanced forefoot stiffness. Its wear and tear could explain the ‘hole’ or gap that the online reviews refer to, as the fabric is no longer there to support the foot during landing. Both shoes have rides which are smooth, lively and natural but the Rebel v3 felt more stable than the Streakfly.
