I felt calmer than I felt in a long time because there was no way I could travel anywhere, so I couldn’t indulge my addiction. He talks about the “culture shock” of coming out of a conflict zone to “a nice, safe European city”. The Madness is a powerful account of the brutality of conflict and the horrors of war - both across the world and inside the self. Driven by an irresistible compulsion to be where the night is darkest, he made a name for reporting with humanity and empathy from places where death and serious injury were not abstractions, and tragedy often just a moment's bad luck away.

The BBC’s Fergal Keane: ‘The breakdowns get harder to recover

Insights into the world of war correspondence, the need to be in the thick of it, the addiction to war. You should never not have an emotional reaction to something that is moving but you can’t let it take you over. That mixture of fear, vanity, inadequacy, driving ambition: this is as familiar to anyone who has spent time with a press pack in a war or at its margins as explosions, checkpoints and guns. A last mission to save orphans of the genocide pushes his nerves – and faith in humanity – past breaking point. I’m fascinated by the Napoleonic wars because they changed Europe and the world, but the idea of being on the field of Waterloo with a telescope fills me with horror.Perpetually anxious and hyper-vigilant, he was bullied by classmates for his facial tics and ultimately became deeply invested in the idea of one day proving he could be brave.

In 2020, he announced that he was stepping down as the BBC's Africa editor because of his ongoing struggles with PTSD. It will make us look inside ourselves — self-examination that takes us to places that are not on the map, but yet we find them. For a number of years, we worked in the same BBC newsroom in Belfast, when the story from the North was still its fighting and, at a time when peace felt like a pipe dream. How does he feel about the fact that important foreign reporting often isn’t consumed as much as more trivial news stories?Keane opens up about his experiences in many conflict zones, including South Africa, Rwanda, Kosovo, the DRC, Sudan, and Ukraine. Having read through the Keane memoir and into Breaking, I found the experience too much — too soon for me after my own writing of Living with Ghosts. Around the year 2001, it seemed that war was everywhere, and Fergal kept on reporting – in Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Lebanon.

Keane has reported for the BBC for more than 30 years and he has done crucial work from some of the world’s most violent conflicts. A reminder that peace is a process; that danger does not end with ceasefires and the making of political agreements and, that a scratch beneath our surface, you can still find bitterness and brokenness. Beauty, where it’s found, is fleeting; flowers on the frontlines, friendship among the mass graves and Keane makes a promise to the reader: he’s going to hold on to those moments. There is, in my case, this ‘hero child’ thing, this sense that I should be responsible, that I am responsible . Keane is gentle but unflinching in describing an obsession that had its roots in a difficult childhood, overshadowed by an alcoholic, sometimes violent father. Shortly after his father’s death in 1990, the BBC asks Keane to become its southern Africa correspondent. Fergal Keane's torments might be as nothing compared to the sufferings he has observed, and his work can do nothing to alleviate those sufferings, but what chance is there of any restitution, no matter how inadequate it may be, without witnesses to the crimes of the truly guilty?
