About this deal

Also, remember that you'll be taking portrait orientation photos when holding the camera in landscapes, the half-frame design makes for tall photos.

Ektar H35 Shoots Two Photos Per Frame of 35mm Film The Kodak Ektar H35 Shoots Two Photos Per Frame of 35mm Film

And long as you accept (and ideally embrace) the compromises in quality that come with its format, the Kodak Ektar H35 does give you more for your money. I don’t really see a big drop in quality because it’s a half frame and to be honest, if you’re looking for a camera like this then this is probably the kind of look you’re going for. This reversal of roles, finding scenes to fit the camera rather than making the camera fit the scene, might be a refreshing change of pace for veteran photographers and may provide a unique perspective to newer photographers. I captured a bunch of photos of buildings and trees to test out the distortion, and I found it was rarely noticeable. This photograph had a slight yellow cast in the highlights, though my scanner was able to auto-correct that for me.The new version, available in a variety of colors, also comes equipped with a litany of advancements over the original. The Kodak Ektar H35 half frame film camera makes two exposures per 35mm frame and is touted as either a way to reduce film costs by doubling the number of photos that can be taken per roll or as an artistic tool to make dual image compositions.

Kodak Ektar H35 1-month review with photos: is this camera

Its size makes it ideal for a backpacking holiday or camping trip where every item is extra weight you have to carry. And so, instead of using the older RMS granularity index, Kodak listed a variety of Print Grain Indexes on its datasheet for Kodak Ektar. Still, we have to hope that, if it’s a sales success, that it will one day inspire them to launch something that is higher quality. I bought a Kodak M35 and an Ilford Sprite IIC, a few Lomography cameras, and later a Reto 3D camera, and then at the end of 2022, the Kodak H35. The key differences between the Kodak Ultra F9 and the Kodak Ektar H35 are that one of them is a half-frame camera and the other is a full-frame camera. The film offers ultra-fine grains, ultra-vivid colors, and high saturation, and is available in ISO 100 only.

But there are some nice things as well, and some of the camera’s weaknesses can even be seen as strengths, depending on the user’s perspective. The flash works best when the subject is pretty close it would seem, as some of our shots further away were a little dark, but the up close ones were amazing. Don’t forget, print films like Kodak Tri-X, TMAX, Gold, Portra, and Ektar have many stops of latitude that can produce a usable image from very inaccurate exposures. We reviewed the Lomography Simple Use Film Camera a few years back; it's still available and is offered with a few different types of film pre-loaded.

I’ve shot a lot of different film cameras over the last 7 years but I rarely get to shoot a new film camera. The company says that the half frame design of the camera makes it a great tool to tell a story through two consecutive frames. It feels sturdier now and will make loading and unloading that much faster and easier, not only than the H35 but also the contemporaneously released AgfaPhoto Half Frame and finicky Diana Mini half frame.
