White Pony was released in 2000 to critical acclaim and unprecedented commercial success, peaking at number three in the US. On April 5, the band played their first show without Cheng since 1998 at the Bamboozle Left festival in Irvine, California. On February 23, 2010, the album's first single, " Rocket Skates", was made available for free download at www.

Moreno underwent vocal training as a precaution after severely damaging his vocal cords on the band's 2001 summer tour. Made by a frustrated and bickering band, and unloved by much of its fanbase, the main talking point for many is it being the final album to feature original bassist Chi Cheng before his ultimately fatal car crash. The album provided their first ever charting singles, " My Own Summer (Shove It)" and " Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)".

The album was praised for its loud-soft dynamics, the flow of the tracks, Moreno's unusual vocals, and the strong rhythm-section performance of Cheng and Cunningham. In late January 2009, the band released a new statement, stating that "our fallen comrade has not yet made significant progress", and that a friend of the band, Sergio Vega (formerly of Quicksand), would be taking over as bassist in Cheng's absence, as he had done temporarily in 1998.We told motherfuckers not to lump us in with nu metal because when those bands go down we aren't going to be with them". The band's legacy has been compared to alternative rock group Radiohead, with some dubbing Deftones "The Radiohead of metal". Within two years, the band began playing club shows and later expanded their gigging territory to San Francisco and Los Angeles, where they played shows alongside bands such as Korn. From their early days as part of the nascent nu-metal movement, through to the ambient post-metal of today. White Pony was subsequently re-released with "Back to School (Mini Maggit)" as the album's opening track. One release is certified gold by the RIAA in recognition of shipments exceeding 500,000 copies, and three are certified platinum for exceeding one million copies. On December 9, 2008, it was announced that Cheng had been moved into the care of an unnamed hospital that "specializes in the care and management of traumatic and non-trauma related brain injuries.The band found even further success with their third album White Pony (2000), which saw a transition away from their earlier, more aggressive sound into a more experimental direction. Not entirely happy with re-releasing the album, the band negotiated to have "Back to School" made available as a free download for anyone who had already bought the original album. The band was also joined by touring guitarist Lance Jackman; [127] on May 20, 2022, it was announced that Jackman would be temporarily replacing Carpenter during the band's 2022 European Tour.

But still was as heavy as any metal band around, as heard on the breakneck lotion or hearing Chino Moreno trading vocal lines with Max Cavalera on Headup. On July 28, Deftones performed a brand-new song titled "Rosemary" and also debuted another track titled "Roller Derby" (later retitled "Poltergeist").The band also performed on such tours as Taste of Chaos, [60] Family Values Tour [61] and the Soundwave Festival. The tour included a limited edition series of silk-screened art prints promoting each show individually, created by the poster artist Jermaine Rogers.
