About this deal

Daisy has written up the case that we solved at the British Museum, so I do not need to mention it here – apart from the fact that it was very exciting, and it made Uncle Felix more worried than ever about us putting ourselves in danger. I thought that we would go to Fallingford, Daisy’s house – but it was all shut up, as it usually is these days. I also think that one of the characters in Romeo and Juliet will get poisoned before the play, and die in the spotlight. When she was twelve, her father handed her a copy of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd and she realised that she wanted to be either Hercule Poirot or Agatha Christie when she grew up.

I guessed that Daisy cant act for some reason ( probably because she was a victim of an accident/ prank, and Hazel has to take the centre of the stage to help the show go on! There was the whole history of the Rue in peeling paper – fading and half-covered advertisements for a hundred closed plays. The most bothersome thing (as Daisy would say) is that for once we were not on the spot during the crucial time. Behind them both walked a man who made me wonder whether Romeo and Juliet had already begun, for he looked like a character in a play. There was only one thing we knew: these latest efforts could only have come from within the theatre. Maybe the substitute actor was onstage because the actual actor knew they were going to be targeted so they pretended to be ill so the substitute would go up.

Miss Daisy Wells will be making her debut as Paris’s Page and as the figure of Rosaline at the Capulet party, and her friend Miss Hazel Wong is playing the small but crucial role of Potpan. But behind the theatre's glittering facade, the girls soon realise that there is trouble at the Rue. He took us for afternoon tea at Brown’s, to a magic show and the theatre, and for dinner shockingly late, at eight or nine at night, in restaurants where laughter sparkled off the golden walls, and ladies daringly showed their shoulders in evening gowns.Daisy made me the Detective Society Secretary because she thought it was not as important as being President, but she didn’t realize then that writing something down makes you the most important person in the story. Lysander, I had learned from reading some of the magazines Daisy lent me, was truly famous, and so it was a clever move to charm him – but not at all an honest one. On Thursday there was a single peacock feather, terribly unlucky in a theatre, sitting on her dressing table. But when London life gets a bit too exciting, the girls are packed off to the Rue Theatre to face an entirely new challenge: acting.
