Description

There are no central characters in this book, but the illustrations are full of people joyously participating in diverse community settings. Many children's books with this theme tend to present their subjects through normalcy-colored glasses, using less detail in the illustrations to make the differences look more in line with societal beauty standards. I liked how colorful it was and how comfortable everyone was with being themselves and being around people who were different. Our downloadable pack has been created with a series of fun, body image boosting activities for kids.

She weaves them into other drawings too, sometimes at the request of one of her many social media followers — she has more than 72,000 on Instagram alone — who might ask, for example, “Can you show someone with a C-section scar? Grieving teens will find incredible solace in Feder’s story; all readers will be stirred by this wrenching yet uplifting musing. Feder includes representations of Africans, Asians, Muslims, and whites from small sizes to plus sizes in all positions. The pastel-toned illustrations effectively convey Feder's youth and the intensity of her emotions while emphasizing the ultimate message of survival and resilience in the face of life-changing grief. Each two page spread focuses the text on a specific kind of variety of bodies: shape, head hair, skin color, body hair, eye color and shape, facial features, skin coloration differences (freckles, moles, port wine stains, etc), fingers, tummies, legs, scars, height, body changes/aging. The more we get used to seeing people represented in a positive way, the less shocking it is, and the more we just incorporate it into the way that we look at the world. Through an empowering, rhythmic text that is perfect for reading aloud, little ones can explore various skin tones, body shapes, hair types, and more, in an accessible way that instills body positivity and confidence. From Sikh- and Muslim-presenting to differently-abled to being nourished (read: breastfed) to multigenerational communities and more.

The last bit of the author bio: “Tyler has a round tummy, fuzzy eyebrows, and a mole on her left arm with a little hair growing out of it. Freckles and vitiligo, hairy fingers, prothetic limbs, long hair, short hair, no hair and covered heads. I cannot think of a friendlier or more delightful primer on women’s history, gender, and body awareness, and — of course — patriarchy-smashing than Unladylike.Readers will notice individuals with prosthetic limbs, in wheelchairs, wearing pouches for health reasons or breathing with aid from an oxygen tank scattered among the various scenes. Some readers may be shocked and even offended by a few of the body parts on display here, but those who are in agreement with Feder's message will appreciate her visual honesty. They show several different disabilities (colostomies, canes, and more), skin colors, races, sizes, ages, trans guy chest scars, kinds of hair, hairy and not hairy, scars, birth marks and more. Her debut solo work, Dancing at the Pity Party (Dial), a graphic memoir about the premature death of her super cool mom, won the Sydney Taylor gold medal for young adult literature.

The animals in the soft pastel illustrations are recognizable, more cuddly than realistic, and quite appealing; their habitats are stylized.Today, Feder is a Chicago-based artist who tries to help kids hold on to that notion — and adults to recapture it. One of her most recent projects to that end was a drawing challenge on Instagram that celebrated physical features from A to Z. Feder’s illustrations not only normalizes the human body in all its glory but they also normalizes to the child reader fatness, queer and interracial couples/families. Though the illustrations are a bit jam-packed, their richness and detail easily make up for the busy feel.
