About this deal

Goole produces a photograph of Smith and shows it to Birling, who acknowledges that she worked in one of his factories. In 1986 Richard Wilson directed a production at the Royal Exchange, Manchester with Geraldine Alexander as Sheila Birling, Hugh Grant as Eric Birling and Graeme Garden as Inspector Goole. Sybil says she feels no regret, as Eva/Daisy had claimed she was pregnant but was not married to the child’s father. Arthur Birling is a heavy-looking , rather portentous looking man in his middle fifties with fairly easy manners but rather provincial in his speech .

Birling toasts the happy couple, and Gerald presents Sheila with a ring which absolutely delights her.Sheila: (half serious, half playful) Yes – except for all last summer, when you never came near me, and I wondered what had happened to you. consciously cultivated various poses - of grumbling patriot, cosmopolitan Yorkshireman, professional amateur, cultured Philistine [and] reactionary Radical. Gerald, however, notes that no family member saw the picture of Eva/Daisy at the same time, and that the Inspector might have conflated the family’s stories by offering pictures of different women, and changing the names from Eva Smith to Daisy Renton.

Why, a friend of mine went over this new liner last week – the Titanic – she sails next week – forty-six thousand eight hundred tons – new york in five days – and every luxury – and unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable . It's a pity Sir George and – we – Lady Croft can't be with us, but they're abroad and so it can't be helped. Birling: (taking it in the same manner) Yes, you don't know what some of these boys get up to nowadays .She was still Eva Smith when Mr Birling sacked her – for wanting twenty-five shillings a week instead of twenty-two and six . I only told her tonight because I knew everything was coming out – it was simply bound to come out tonight – so I thought she might as well know in advance. A mysterious inspector interrogates a wealthy English family about their responsibility for the death of a young working-class factory girl. The Inspector demonstrates that each member of the Birling family, and Gerald, has played a part in Eva/Daisy’s suicide, and that all should consider themselves guilty. I realize that you may have to conduct some sort of inquiry, but I must say that so far you seem to be conducting in a rather peculiar and offensive manner.

When they are left alone for a moment, Sheila discovers that Gerald had been having an affair with Daisy Renton all of the previous summer. The play takes place on a single night in 1912, slightly before the First World War, and focuses on the prosperous middle-class Birling family, who live in a comfortable home in Brumley, "an industrial city in the north Midlands".Well, when I tried the thing on and looked at myself and knew that it was all wrong, I caught sight of this girl smiling at miss Francis – as if to say: 'doesn't she look awful' – and I was absolutely furious. Sheila is not as upset as one might expect; indeed, she seems to have already guessed why Gerald was absent from their relationship last summer.

Gerald: we went along to the county hotel, which I knew would be quiet at that time of night , and we had a drink or two and talked. And then, instead of standing up to him, you let him bluff you into talking about your private affairs. Mrs Birling: I was upset because Eric had left the house, and this man said that if Eric didn't come back, he'd have to go and find him. Nor that young man, Croft, though he at least had some affection for her and made her happy for a time. Mrs Birling: then he'd be entirely responsible – because the girl wouldn't have come to us, and have been refused assistance, if it hadn't been for him.The family, closely knit and friendly at the beginning of the evening, is shown up as selfish, self-centered or cowardly, its good humor turning to acid, and good fellowship to dislike, before the evening is over.
