About this deal

Thanks to them, with their awful name and clever tech, you can now get an innovative kettlebell unit that sits on an electronic weights base, which allows you to adjust the mass of the bell at the touch of a button. The ergonomics are what make them so outstanding, but the finish, the broad, grip-able handle and cool, retro boxing gym-esque branding made them our firm favourite.

Some kettlebells have a textured powder coat on the body, while others have a smooth vinyl coating, paint, or padding. Because there’s only one kettlebell and it’s so big, it is best used in tandem with the JaxJox app, which tracks sensors on the kettlebell to monitor the progress of your swing as it guides you through virtual workouts. As a rule of thumb, beginners should start with a single bell as they build up their confidence and ability, before moving on to two. It's enough to have even the most experience gym-goer sweating and we doubt anyone would be able to get through one of the longer workouts at maximum 19kg weight selection without keeling over.

But as previously mentioned, the fact the outer unit houses the internal weights, the kettlebell itself is a bulky old thing. The E-Coat finish is corrosion-resistant and smoother than powder coat kettlebells, making it easier to clean while still providing a non-slip surface that you can hold onto. It's not quite as well-executed as regular metal kettlebells, and it can feel overly chunky and slightly unwieldy to use. I'm no professional kettlebell athlete but I'd wager good money anyone seriously into their classes would agree that the JaxJox unit just doesn't feel quite right.

Not quite the same thing, but you might want to consider getting a Bowflex SelectTech 2080 Barbell with Curl Bar instead of the JaxJox KettlebellConnect. Here, you're literally swinging 19kg of metal between your legs and it's very easy to get things wrong. Kettlebells are available in a variety of sizes and weights, and some even come with special features, such as adjustable weights and activity tracking. The unit itself sits on an electronic base with simple plus and minus buttons for adjusting the amount of weight secured inside the exterior shell.

Finally, and slightly nannying-ly, a kettlebell isn't like a treadmill or an exercise bike, where the risk of injury among the uninitiated is fairly low.

Develop and build your strength, power, and endurance all while exercising in the space of your own home. The JaxJox Kettlebell is the equivalent of six kettlebells in one, so it’s also a convenient space-saving option. Shaped like cannonballs with handles, kettlebells can be used to perform many of the same exercises as dumbbells yet also allow for more dynamic movements like swings and snatches. It is large, easy to grip with two hands, and – once you’ve got past the initial fear that the weights might drop out the bottom – a pleasure to use.

However, it’s important to note that the Kettle Gryp only fits dumbbells with handles that are at least 4. There are all sorts of kettlebells on the market, including rubber encased, vinyl covered, neoprene covered and even selectorised kettlebells. If you’re new to kettlebell training, you may want to work with a trainer to try a few exercises with different weights before making a purchase. Repeatedly putting down (or dropping) your kettlebells can do quite a bit of damage to your floors, so it’s always best to invest in a gym mat. When he’s not testing the latest fitness wearable and action camera, he’s out in a shed fawning over his motorcycles or trying not to kill himself on a mountain bike/surfboard/other extreme thing.Kettlebells add resistance to exercises just like dumbbells and barbells do, so they’re primarily used for strength training. The neoprene case feels durable enough to last through a lot of workouts, but to maintain its protective layer for as long as possible we’d suggest storing it on a mat. We also tested – and loved – two very different kettlebells, a digital one with adjustable weight and a fluid-filled kettlebell, which are great for lifters with some experience.
