I guess I just don’t see a strong narrative leading us to any sort of definitive conclusion. Riri makes a point about their meddling helping Anzu have good times she might otherwise never have had, regardless of the romance angle, which, as a perspective, is coming in a bit late in the game. And it turns out Junta hasn’t been under a spell of any kind, so yay, but also boo. So that mostly leaves Kazuki, but there’s absolutely nothing done with him this volume except a brief bit at the start with his sister. It’s good, but if I’m going to care about anything I need a little more. The Imp is the apex of all that is evil and I really like how Anzu isn't giving up and really wants to help free Junta from the Imp's spell. I kind of ship her being single, BUT I'm a romantic at heart, so want her to be happily paired off, but I DON'T want the imp to win. Catch-22! Romantic Killer vol 2 continues the story of Anzu, an independent girl who needs nothing except chocolate, video games and her cat. But somehow she has been caught up in a fairy’s plot to help her find love, and she’s not allowed to have her 3 favourite things until she does. There should be one, just so I can use it to describe this series, which means well and just doesn’t do it for me enough of the time.The big reunion gets turned on its head when the boys figure they are about to get away with mischief until Anzu turns out to be too cool for pretty much anybody. I definitely disliked the latest guy we meet. I noticed I sort of skimmed over his parts because I just didn't care for his actions or general attitude, no matter how hard he "changed" to get to know Anzu by the end. If I wanted to see more of a "new character," then please give us more Junta as I genuinely like his character. I can honestly say that he fits a lot of the cliche childhood friend tropes, but rather than it being "annoying," it's enduring. I'll admit that this made me leery at first, even without taking into account the fact that I read this volume a few days after I lost my sixteen-year-old cat Big Al. Largely that's because from a certain, possibly overthought, perspective, what Riri is doing is explicitly forcing Anzu into a situation she neither wants nor is comfortable with. Add to that the fact that the little imp makes it clear that he doesn't give a damn about whether she's anywhere on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, and it's a premise that can be a little uncomfortable. We don't all find hot guys sexually appealing. Or maybe that’s the point? Eh, even if this does go a whole other ‘single for life and happy’ direction, I don’t quite think it’ll combat the general aimlessness of this volume. Before the whole thing was meandering, but right now it feels practically rudderless. I found out at some point that this is only four volumes (NNNNOOOOOOO!!!!!) and that it's based off of an anime or that an anime of it exists, so guess what I need to hunt down?!? SO EXCITED.Anzu herself remains amazing, just wanting to be left alone with her cat, and her attitude and happiness with her life on her own terms make her a five star heroine in a three star story. I guess we’ll see how it shakes out, but she’s amazing.
