About this deal

The High burst speed has been raised ever so slightly from 8fps on the E-PL7 to 8.5fps on the E-PL8. The Low burst mode, on the other hand, remains the same at 3.7fps. In the real world, you will hardly notice any difference.

Each of these profiles is customisable and you can adjust the contrast using the Highlights & Shadow Control and/or the vignetting using the Shading Editor. It’s also possible to replicated the effect of using traditional colour filters with the monochrome profiles and adjust the saturation of up to 12 colours by up to +/-5 steps for the colour profiles. The coloured filter and saturation adjustments are made using a type of colour wheel control on the camera’s rear screen. Keep up the fantastic work on your blog. Your passion for photography shines through in your writing, and I look forward to reading more of your articles Latest Olympus Cameras in the future. Wishing you many exciting adventures and beautiful shots with the Olympus E-P7! The menu system is similar to that of the professional OM-D E-M1. This is a complex, multi-level menu system that might not seem intuitive at first sight, especially to beginners, so reading the manual is a good idea before starting to explore it. I know it’s too early to judge the new OM company. The E-P7 was likely already planned before the change of ownership (as was the 8-25mm lens) and, hopefully, its release gives them more time to focus on new products. Furthermore, the camera is being released in Europe and select other regions only, excluding North America (for the time being at least). All this to say that we’re not seeing the true face of OM Digital Solutions yet.

Summary

No review of an Olympus PEN would be complete without taking a look at the varous effects modes on offer. In common with other PEN models the E-PL7 offers the full trange of 14 Art filters. Olympus was one of the first manufacturers to include in-camera filters in anything more advanced than a point and shoot compact and those on the PEN E-PL7 are among the best and most versatile around. The range has grown and there are now 14 available filters including Pop Art, Grainy Film, Pin Hole, Cross Process, Key Line and Partial Colour shown above. Unlike the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III and OM-D E-M5 Mark III which have a hybrid focusing system that uses both phase and contrast detection, the E-M10 Mark IV has just contrast detection autofocusing. The Pen E-P7 also uses contrast detection autofocusing and there are 121 selectable AF points.

The E-PL7 is the sixth camera in Olympus's midrange PEN Lite lineup. The PEN series has been somewhat overshadowed by the excellent OM-D cameras, whose DSLR-like styling has been better received than the rangefinder-esque PENs, but the PL7 makes a bid to reaffirm the position of the smaller cameras. To test the PEN E-PL7’s continuous shooting performance I fitted it with a freshly formatted UHS-1 SD card, turned the stabilisation off, and selected 1/500 at 200 ISO. In the fastest Sequential H mode it fired off 16 Large Fine JPEGs at a rate of 8.5fps before slowing to a slightly erratic 2fps or so. So in actual fact there’s not much change from the earlier model’s continuous shooting capabilities. Except that on the E-PL7 the buffer clears with a second or two, so you can shoot another 16-frame burst almost immediately. Unfortunately the PEN E-P7 doesn't combine the shots either in-camera or in the supplied Olympus software, so you'll need to use Photoshop or a specialized software program like Helicon Focus to combine all of the shots into one image. Again, this camera's main feature is the 4k video, IBIS, great color options and output, and at 337g. It only disappoints for me in build (which is also the reason it's 337g) and extremely low shutter speeds (1/15s and lower). It's been an awful long wait for a new Olympus camera, so has the E-P7 been worth the patience? Well, it depends what you're looking for in a camera. This article is about released in 2021. For released in 2014, see Olympus PEN E-PL7. Olympus PEN E-P7 This issue is not exclusive to the EP7. I wish Panasonic/OMDS got their act together on this and just worked on the OMDS bodies. As usual for an Olympus release, the E-PL7 also gains some extra Art Filters. The company's enthusiasm for constantly expanding this feature is understandable, given that it pioneered the as-you-shoot processing effect in cameras. We're not entirely sure why you wouldn't do this once the image is on your smartphone but Olympus insists that customer research suggests people like to add filters on the camera and on their smartphones. There are 9 ISO settings available on the Olympus E-P7 which you can select at any time if the camera is in one of the creative shooting modes. Here are some 100% crops which show the noise levels for each ISO setting for both JPEG and RAW formats.

Overall, the E-P7 may not have been the camera that everyone was expecting or hoping OM Digital Solutions would release first, but it's certainly an excellent addition to the existing range. We can't wait to see what they launch next...It’s easy in this day and age to be put off by the size of Four Thirds sensors, but the E-P7 puts in a very solid performance and produces some lovely images. All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 20M Superfine JPEG image size option, which gives an average image size of around 10Mb. Olympus' Live Guide has once again been implemented on the PEN E-P7. This lets users try out picture adjustments with the aid of an onscreen slider bar to adjust the likes of depth of field and see the results in real time before pressing the shutter release button with accessibility extended beyond iAuto mode. The Live Guide options are presented as a colourful toolbar on the right hand side of the screen. Recent iterations of the PEN Lite have been caught between the point-and-shoot orientated PEN Minis and the enthusiast-targeted full-sized PENs, and have ended up not being a perfect fit for anyone. The PL7 seems less concerned about treading on its siblings' toes: it wears its classic styling more boldly, rather than looking like a pastiche of its big brother and the control dial means it can offer a more hands-on shooting experience than previous little PENs. Interestingly, there's no sign yet of an update to the less expensive model.

I understand. The E-P7 is not for you and that's ok. Some people don't care that much about the EVF and care more about other things (I am in that other group). Like TILT LCD or death :-). Though I would have been quite fine with an "GM9" - better processor, latest DFD, 20 MP no AA filter. That would have been my camera. As it stands, the Olympus PEN EP-7 will only be on sale in Asia and Europe, which means you can't currently buy it in the US or Australia. Great DOA camera. Seems Olympus marketing is detached from the market. Great if they can go the Fuji way but I believe they'll fail. Unlike the Art Filters and Picture Controls, the Color/Monochrome Profiles can’t be used with video, they’re just available for still images. However, it is possible to shoot raw and Jpeg files simultaneously so you can have the Jpeg with the effect and the raw without. English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Czech, Dutch, Danish, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Croatian, Slovenian, Hungarian, Greek, Slovak, Turkish, Latvian, Estonian, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, SerbianHowever, for those who want to go a bit further, you’ll also find advanced options on the mode dial, including semi-automatic and manual modes. The other two top dials can be used to adjust settings such as exposure compensation, shutter speed or aperture, depending on the mode you’re shooting in. As on the Lumix GF7, you can tap the PEN E-PL7’s touch screen to focus during movie recording, an advantage both touch screen models share over the Samsung NX3000. You can see an example of the E-PL7’s touch-focus in action in the movie section below.
