Het deed me net iets teveel denken aan De Magische Eenhoorn Academie van Julie Sykes (kinderen mogen naar een magische school, krijgen een eenhoorn, moeten een band er mee krijgen, eenhoorn krijgt superkrachten (nog niet in deze maar de kinderen zijn wel aan het praten erover dat ze misschien zoiets krijgen), er gebeurt iets spannends en onze MC MOET helpen want zij is DE ENIGE die dit kan en ze moet dat samen met haar eenhoorn doen dus +1 op relatie). Waarom is Dave > Dirk geworden in het Nederlands? Dave kan gewoon hoor, ik ken er zelfs een paar. Als Mira > Mira kan blijven zie ik niet in waarom Dave moet worden veranderd. Mira: I know! I’m so excited too. I just have so much fun with you and our friends at Unicorn School and I think everyone will enjoy reading about our adventures. Like the time… Oh, wait, I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone! So, Dave, as this is an interview, can you tell me about your childhood? Dave isn’t quite the sparkly magical unicorn Mira was expecting to find at the end of the rainbow – he’s more grumpy than glittery, more interested in lunch than magical quests and he always runs off when Mira tries to ride him – but Mira’s not going to let that get her down. Along with her new friends and their (much more glittery) unicorns, she is determined to be the best at Quests and protect the special unicorn world!

Mira: Great! I think we’ve learned lots about you. Now, time for YOU interview ME! Mira, what’s the best thing about Unicorn School? So pleased you asked Dave, that’s a great question! I’d have to say when I first got my school invitation letter I was SUPER EXCITED about winning lots of medals and going on lots of quests. But now I think the best thing about Unicorn School is having you as my Unicorn Best Friend Forever. Mira Desai on haaveillut koko pienen ikänsä Yksisarviskouluun pääsystä. Koulu on avoinna vain harvoille ja valituille, mutta koska Miran äiti ja isosiskokin ovat päässeet sinne, niin Mirankin on aivan pakko päästä. Kuuntelin tämän äänikirjana ja tästä syystä minusta tuntui, että jotain pientä jäi tästä lukukokemuksesta puuttumaan, nimittäin kuvitus. Toivon, että kuvitus on tässä kirjassa upea. Ainakin kirjan kansi on nimittäin todella herkullinen, värikylläinen hattararäjähdys! Tarinassa ei ollut ihan hirveän paljon seikkailua ja vaarallisia tilanteita, mutta pieru- ja kakkahuumoria sitten senkin edestä ja luulen, että nuoret lukijat innostuvat siitä varmasti. This is a cute, Easy Chapter book that I think any child could enjoy. There is equal time given to both girl and boy characters, though the main character is a girl. The girls in the book are brave and one boy is timid while the other boy is a slight bully.To celebrate the release of The Naughtiest Unicorn by Pip Bird, we managed to catch the stars of our newest unicorn-tastic middle-grade book, Mira and Dave the unicorn, for a very exclusive interview. De illustraties waren erg leuk gedaan en ik moest vaak lachen wat er gebeurde op ze. De illustrator heeft echt een leuke stijl. My only issue (which is sort of a non issue, because I’m not bothered by it, but others might be) is that Dave the Unicorn apparently farts a lot, has big poops, and even threw up everything in his stomach. I think this is the author’s way of showing the reader that he isn’t a perfect specimen, but that he has his positive points within the story too. There’s such awesome diversity in this book. Mira is a person of color, as is her new friend, Raheem. Her other friend, Darcy, uses a wheelchair, and her inclusion in all of their activities is natural and presented as the norm. I love when books exhibit diversity as something to be expected, especially in stories for younger kids. In this laugh-out-loud illustrated chapter book, Mira is excited about going to Unicorn School—until she’s paired with a very un-unicorny unicorn named Dave.
