Typing on this keyboard is a pretty good experience. I found the actuation force to be spot on what I would expect. The key travel is short so this is really important to the typing experience, in my opinion. It didn’t take me long at all to adjust typing on this. And while gaming, I was sure when I was depressing the keys – they didn’t feel mushy at all. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU: High-End laptop graphics card based on the Ampere GA104 chip. At the time of the launch in early 2021, the 3080 is the fastest laptop graphics card on the market. Storage speed proved to be good rather than great, with the Samsung SSD returning sequential read and write speeds of 3,126MB/s and 2,648MB/s respectively. The Asus M16 has it well beaten, recording speeds of 5,536 and 4,325MB/s, though the Legion 7’s speeds are still in line with other high-spec machines we’ve reviewed recently. For storage, there are two M.2 2280 PCIe gen4 slots on this series, and this sample comes preconfigured with a fast gen4 Micron drive.

The last difference to mention is the result of the Quiet modes. CPU performance is so much worse for the Ryzen model in this mode. It’s definitely because of the lower power limit. The good news though is the fan noise is better than the Intel version in this mode. On to more demanding loads, we start by testing the CPU’s performance by running the Cinebench R15 test for 15+ times in a loop, with a 1-2 seconds delay between each run.Interestingly enough, the Asus Zephyrus M16 does have a 16” DCI-P3 panel, but that panel doesn’t have the 500+nits of brightness that this one does. Given the choice, I think I would still prefer this one. The Legion 7 is preinstalled with Lenovo Vantage. The software is used for a number of different things, but one of the uses is to adjust the CPU/GPU power settings.

Even so, I’d rather Lenovo would push a higher TDP of around 130-140W for this mode, paired with fans around 44-45 dB, if possible. That would make more sense to me on a Balanced profile. As it is, this Balanced mode is very close to the Quiet mode in terms of GPU performance and even fan noise. Battlefield V, Cyberpunk, Doom, Witcher 3 – recorded with Fraps/in-game FPS counter in campaign mode; For Far Cry New Dawn under ultra presets, the Lenovo Legion 7 hit 91 fps at 1080p and 82 fps at 1600p. Meanwhile, the Alienware x17 hit 94 fps on 1080p and 60 fps in 4K. The Razer Blade hit 93 fps at 1080p and 82 fps in 4K. At 1080p, the Raider had the best performance, tapping out at 99 fps. READ NEXT: These are the best gaming headsets you can buy right now Lenovo Legion 7 review: Price & competitionThe CPU takes a hit in longer loads, as it drops to inly 45-60W sustained, and the GPU performs at about 85% of what it can do at higher power, as it only runs at 115W on this profile. Overall, Balance mode is usable on this design, especially for combined loads and gaming, but less so for heavy CPU chores, as explained earlier. Gaming performance The system still doesn’t automatically switch the screen’s refresh from 165 Hz to 60 Hz when you unplug the laptop, as other devices do, but I could cycle between the 60 and 165 Hz modes by hitting Fn+R. But the Ryzen model offers way better battery life. So if you plan to use your laptop unplugged a lot, I can’t say enough how badly you should consider the Ryzen model over the Intel model. The overall feel of the laptop just oozes quality to me. I already liked the Legion 5 Pro for it’s solid build quality and this just feels even better. It’s a little heavier than I’m used to but still pretty easy to carry and the weight distribution is good.
