About this deal

This simply-named venue is basically a gin lover’s playground, offering up four enticing levels of gin-related debauchery and its own distillery producing Portobello Road gin. Alex explains that it is her passion and authenticity that keeps her inspired in business, alongside her family. She asserts that it’s not all exciting in business, but if you don’t get the regularities right, it can be a costly derailment to your plans – a business analysis, considering rules and mandatories are essential. Over two hours, you’ll drop by two gin bars and also tour a distillery. A passionate local will be your driver, full of insider information and gin history.

Alex and her business partner, Howard set up the company just over four years ago, following the passing of Howard’s father, Paul Raymond. Paul, a proud northerner, was the original King of Soho. Naming the brand after Howard’s father was a way of celebrating his life and the district of London that he helped revolutionise many years ago. There are plenty of London gin distilleries trying all kinds of weird and wonderful things. Then there’s those that remain true to traditional methods and ingredients. When we call this one ‘small batch’, we mean really small batch. As in, sixteen bottles a day, distilled in a humble copper pot behind the bar.

The people they team up with to do the cooking are the folks from La Trompette, a Michelin-starred restaurant and neighbour to Sipsmith. They cook up a delicious menu of French food that goes rather well with a few of Sipsmith’s drinks. Secret Gin Tour I always respect people who go out of their comfort zone and set up on their own – I think it’s very brave. It takes a lot of guts because you’re essentially saying: “This is who I am.” You may not always get it right but through time and experience you learn to express yourself.”

King of Soho Variorum Gin Details

Any plans on the horizon you can reveal in terms of The King of Soho’s future? In as far as it’s possible to plan anything in this day and age? Well, the brains behind Sipsmith actually put the chatter into action. The two best friends opened their distillery in 2009 and have been going strong ever since.

Alex insists that the first step is having an idea for a business and looking at the skills that you have personally. Then you need to consider what you need to learn and research. Who hasn’t dreamed of starting a bar or distillery with their best friend, especially after a few fine drinks have been consumed?

We really wanted this to be an authentic brand. At the same time you talk about Soho and it has become a symbol of creativity, hedonism, non-conformity, and there are a lot of districts in major cities across the world that are called Soho Jensen’s Gin proudly produces ‘gin as it should be’– gin that’s true to its origins and traditions. Their fabulous Old Tom gin is even replicated from an authentic 1840s gin handbook.

The fact the business is called The King of Soho Drinks suggests it won’t all be about gin in the future, but for now it’s job done with Howard Raymond and Alex Robson’s original ambition. ‘It’s about fun, and Paul Raymond and Soho is all about fun. This gin is a fitting tribute to his legacy.’ Discussing plans over a gin martini in a bar one night with an intrepid sense of ‘why not?’, Alex and her business partner sparked the idea to produce their own bespoke gin brand. As well as your own wax-sealed 500ml bottle, you’ll also leave the three-hour experience with a ‘gin gift bag’, which sounds pretty good to me. Sipsmith Supper ClubNumerous awards show it was a mighty fine call, while we can certainly attest the gin is delicious.
