Despite giving a daily recap of each of the LEGO® Advent Calendars for the last few years, I’ve never actually reviewed one, until now. Last year, the long-running LEGO Advent Calendars range expanded to include a Marvel-themed one. It was focused on the Avengers and featured a mix of minibuilds and minifigures inspired by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. This year’s offer is a little more intergalactic and is inspired by the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Disney+ Holiday Special. The exact story of this small screen spin-off is currently unknown but it’s safe to assume it will be at least a little festive. Compatible with other LEGO® sets – The gifts found within the calendar combine easily with all other LEGO Marvel building toys From left to right, we have Yondu’s Arrow, an Annulax Battery (from GOTG Volume 2), a Quarnyx Battery (from the Prison Scene in GOTG 1), an eyeball that he gets Baby Groot to collect, and the prisoner’s prosthetic leg from the same Prison Break scene in GOTG 1.

The Mining Pod has previously made an appearance in the first wave of GOTG sets, 76020 Knowhere Escape Mission and the Escape Pod was from 76102 Thor’s Weapon Quest, in case you’re wondering where these little pods are from. No matter your interest, that line-up should have something for everyone to enjoy over the holiday season. The designs are fairly simplistic, with only the general shape and colours used to clue you into what they actually are. It might seem like a box of random scraps, but each individual item in the crate has a special reference to the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and it was a lot of fun trying to figure out what each item was!

On Day 9, we get an extremely festive and fun minifigure with Nebula in an ugly Christmas sweater! She also has a wrapped present, but the highlight is her Christmas sweater which has a crude Thanos knitted into it, as well as what I believe are Infinity Stone baubles on each side. She does make an appearance of sorts, though. 76231 Guardians of the Galaxy Advent Calendar’s minifigure highlights include two seasonal variants for Drax and Nebula, both of whom are wearing a festive sweater – much like Iron Man in 2021’s 76196 The Avengers Advent Calendar.There’s a mix of miniature ships including the Milano and Benatar behind some of the doors, and smaller ships referencing other films too. In the potential context of the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, these could easily be toys and their builds are surprisingly challenging for how few pieces they use. That’s no bad thing, as it helps extend the building time for select days. Typically, when you buy a LEGO set, the box it comes in is purely functional and serves no purpose other than to store the build. But with the LEGO Advent calendars, this is not the case. I cannot stress this enough: Do not open the box from its sides, and do not tear the box, because the box itself is the Advent calendar. There's a large cardboard flap covering the broad side of the box, and underneath it are 24 perforated "doors." Each door leads to a separate compartment within the box, and inside each compartment is a small plastic bag filled with LEGO pieces–1 of 24 miniature builds based on a theme. The original LEGO 76021 The Milano Spaceship Rescue is one of my favourite sets ever, and I still have the ship on display since 2014, so here’s a side by side with the full-sized Milano.
