A step up on the Garrett ACE 150 that justifies the extra cash is an internal pinpointer. Pinpointers narrow down the dig area and really help contain the mess, so it’s great to see it on one of Garrett’s better value detectors.

If you’ve previously bought a cheap machine and gotten discouraged by the constant bleeping and nothing to be found Garrett will change your mind. But there’s a problem with metal detectors aimed at children – they are toys without the capability to sort trash from potential treasure. As we mentioned earlier, the Garrett ACE 250 has a sizable elliptical coil to cover more ground as you search. That’s not the only good thing about it! It’s also submersible. You can use the detector in a few inches of water without having to worry about damage. Operating at a frequency of 8.25 kHz, ideal for detecting small objects, this unit has been specifically designed for use in European conditions. Whereas some other metal detectors are designed with US terrain in mind, the EuroACE’s set up is better adapted to easy use in the UK. Next, we tested how well each metal detector worked when attempting to locate an object that was submerged in water. Here we placed various coins, relics, and gold underwater, each one submerged anywhere from four to 12 inches deep. One gripe is that it couldn’t make up its mind on several targets. The indicator kept moving between 2 and 8 inches. Max had to dig a larger hole than necessary to find his target. He found that scanning the removed soil helped locate the find, but there was more mess and faff than necessary. It doesn’t have many buttons and has an easily understandable screen. I can move the detector up and down and side to side slowly to find lots of treasures.With a relatively accurate pinpoint feature, object location is also easy to specify. By pressing the ‘pinpoint’ button, you can narrow down the exact position of the find. x AA batteries are needed to power up which are housed in the control box and easily accessed in the usual way. The control box is placed at the top of the handle where your fingers can easily reach the buttons and I was easily able to see the readouts once I’d hit a target. Compared to other metal detectors I’ve seen the buttons are few and simple which is great news for someone that’s easily confused like me.
