Monitor indicator beads roughly once a month (4-6 weeks) for color transition from orange to green. The E-500 isn’t the only low cost rechargeable mini desiccant dehumidifier manufactured by Eva-Dry. The E-333 is similarly priced (it’s actually a bit cheaper) and works exactly the same way. It also dehumidifies by adsorption and it also contains the same silica gel. Like the E-500 it has an “indicator window” that will indicate when the device needs to be recharged. The crystals (of silica gel) in the indicator window will change color over the course of several weeks as the device dehumidifies. When the desiccant is completely unsaturated the color of the crystals in the indicator window will be blue. When the desiccant reaches 100% saturation the color of the crystals will turn pink – this indicates that it’s time to plug in the device for it to recharge.

Finally, you may be comparing the E-500 to cheaper non-rechargeable disposable desiccant moisture absorbers, the most popular of which are DampRid products. We’ve reviewed two such disposable DampRid products thus far, the FG50T and the FG83LV. Like the E-333 and E-500, they also don’t need to be plugged in to dehumidify. The E-500 should only be used in small damp spaces that may have odors or other signs of humidity (such as mold and mildew). Examples of these types of spaces include kitchen and/or bathroom cabinets, closets, boat cabins, refrigerators, etc. Recall that it doesn’t require electricity to operate (it only requires electricity to be recharged), making it a great option for spaces without easy access to electricity such as car trunks, safes, and the like. Speaking of safes, the E-500 is also a great solution for spaces that aren’t necessarily humid but absolutely need to stay dry. The best example of this type of space is a safe containing valuable documents, jewelry, etc. that aren’t necessarily damp but do absolutely need to be protected from moisture. Final Thoughts Eva-Dry’s Dehumidifier uses “Whisper Technology” to maintain a low noise output. The manufacturer claims the average noise output for all thermo-electric dehumidifiers they tested was 53.2 dB. The Eva-Dry EDV-1100 measures just 50.9 dB, about 2.3 dB below average. We were amazed by how little noise can be detected from this machine and think it’s one of its biggest selling points, especially if you use this in a bedroom.In terms of capacity, Eva-Dry covers about 150 square feet and collects a maximum of 16 ounces of moisture, whereas Tenergy Sorbi can cover 200 square feet and collect up to 25 ounces of moisture. When it comes to performance, we think the Tenergy’s ability to both purify and dehumidify the area is unbeatable, although the Eva-Dry also does a good job of dehumidifying the area and does so at a whisper, which is considerably quieter when compared to Tenergy. To renew, simply fold down the hidden plug and plug the unit into an outlet (avoid the use of extension cords) for 10 to 12 hours (approximately). Be sure to maintain a minimum of 24"-36" of open space around the unit as the unit will release heat and moisture vapor while plugged in. The E-333 and similar devices should therefore only be used for extremely mild humidity problems in extremely small spaces. To put this type of square footage in perspective imagine two different rooms, one that’s 333 square feet and another that’s 500 square feet. Our example 333 square foot space is 33 feet long and 11 feet wide. Our example 500 square foot space is 25 feet long and 20 feet wide. These are sizable spaces. As we discussed above, Eva-Dry recommends the E-333 and E-500 for small spaces such as closets, pantries, small bathrooms, etc. Do any of these spaces have anywhere close to the dimensions of 33 by 11 ft or 25 by 20 ft? The answer is no. Thus even Eva-Dry themselves don’t recommend these products for any type of space with the same dimensions as their specified area of coverage of 333 or 500 square feet. Why then does the manufacturer attach these large overblown square footage numbers to what they themselves call mini dehumidifiers? Update: Contrary to the statements we make below, the manufacturer does not give the “area of coverage” for either the E-333 or the E-500 in terms of square footage. Instead, it is given in terms of cubic feet – a volume. Thus, much of the discussion below in which we incorrectly refer to the E-333′s area of coverage as 333 square feet and the E-500′s area of coverage as 500 square feet does not apply. The E-333′s actual area of coverage is 333 cubic feet and the E-500′s actual area of coverage is 500 cubic feet.

Note that even in the most humid, warmest conditions this unit will not reach capacity until a few weeks have passed. Eva-Dry’s electric models are covered by a 1-year warranty, but like most electric products it depends on the preventative maintenance as to how long they will last. Eva-Dry specifies that the E-500 can be used in spaces as large as 500 cubic feet and that the E-333 can be used in spaces as large as 333 cubic feet. While we don’t disagree that you could use these devices in spaces as large as 333 and 500 cubic feet, our recommendation is that you don’t. The E-500 and E-333 have a multitude of uses but dehumidifying any reasonably sized space (and in this case we consider 333 cubic feet to be a a “reasonably sized space”) isn’t one of them.
