About this deal

Decision made, I exit the stall, cutting my eyes away from the mirror. I don’t want to see myself right now, when I have no idea who “I” am or will be tomorrow. In the numb zone I’ve used as a survival tool before, almost as many times as I’ve tried to find the meaning of that symbol on the note, I follow the soft hum of orchestral music, entering a room with a high, oval ceiling decorated with magnificent murals. I tell myself to get lost in the crush of patrons in business attire and waiters offering champagne and finger foods, but I don’t. I simply stand there, mourning the new life I’ve just begun, and that I know is now gone. My “zone” has failed me. My only comfort is that my first name won’t change. I’m now Amy Bensen, rather than Amy Reynolds. I’m still Amy. It’s the one piece of good news in all of this and I cling to it, using it to stave off the meltdown I feel coming. I just have to hold it together until I get on the plane. Then I can sink into my seat and think myself into my numb zone, which I can’t seem to find right now.

In today’s world, the preferred form of escapism consists of the compulsive need to be constantly involved in electronic life, searching for seemingly important information, playing games, or poking around on social media. In fact, several studies, including one carried out at Duzce University, have found a connection between the time we spend on social networks and the Internet in general and the tendency to escapism. The moment you start thinking that you can’t escape reality, it becomes impossible for you to escape reality, because the more negative thoughts you have, the harder it is for you to be happy and enjoy life.

3) Break down your toxic spiritual habits

God became man to turn creatures into sons: not simply to produce better men of the old kind but to produce a new kind of man. It is not like teaching a horse to jump better and better but like turning a horse into a winged creature. You might wonder how you will ever feel “grown-up” enough to become resilient enough to deal with painful feelings such as disappointment, jealousy, guilt, shame, hurt, upset, rejection, abandonment, bereavementand other suffering that are all part of the human journey. The truth is that one of the reasons why we often feel the urge to escape reality is that we’re exhausted from our routine life.

The Norwegian psychologist Frode Stenseng has presented a dualistic model of escapism in relation to different types of activity engagements. He discusses the paradox that the flow state ( Csikszentmihalyi) resembles psychological states obtainable through actions such as drug abuse, sexual masochism, and suicide ideation ( Baumeister). Accordingly, he deduces that the state of escape can have both positive and negative meanings and outcomes. Stenseng argues that there exist two forms of escapism with different affective outcomes dependent on the motivational focus that lies behind the immersion in the activity. Escapism in the form of self-suppression stems from motives to run away from unpleasant thoughts, self-perceptions, and emotions, whereas self-expansion stems from motives to gain positive experiences through the activity and to discover new aspects of self. Stenseng has developed the "escape scale" to measure self-suppression and self-expansion in people's favorite activities, such as sports, arts, and gaming. Empirical investigations of the model have shown that: [25] The gospel tells us what to do with our brokenness, and why we experience it in the first place. The gospel narrative—creation, rebellion, redemption, new creation—gives us a framework for understanding that we experience brokenness because of sin, and the way to escape that brokenness is not by ignoring it or numbing ourselves to sin’s painful effects, but rather coming to Christ with our brokenness to find healing and restoration. In the midst of our sin and pain, we can run to Christ and find that for which we’re really searching. Instead of thinking like that, think like this: The great thing about these bad things happening to me was that they led me to discover what I love doing in life. 2) Identify things that make you unhappyWhat is behind the desire of so many people to create and then inhabit an alternate reality? And what are the dangers of being swept up into a virtual world?

Why escapism benefits from a dose of pandemic reality

By doing this, you learn to critically think about everything you hear and read, which will help improve your decision-making skills and allow you to make more informed decisions. Begin with yourself. Stop searching for external fixes to sort out your life. Deep down, you know this isn’t working. Drinking a glass of wine listening to music after a long day at work can be a nice way to relax. But if you walk through the door looking for the bottle because you can’t deal with the reality of your home or your life, you need to stop and ask yourself what problem you have to solve. Sometimes our lives are so scattered or busy that we tend to daydream and long to escape reality. Imagining and creating a life in our minds sometimes can be a good thing though it is kind of odd. Our minds are so puzzling and confusing sometimes, creating a strong desire to escape that we turn to our inner minds. The science of the mind is very complex but well understood. The mind is so complicated that most people do not understand some of the most basic concepts of the brain and its functions. What does it mean to escape reality?

Entire industries have sprung up to foster a growing tendency of people to remove themselves from the rigors of daily life – especially into the digital world. [5] [6] Many activities that are normal parts of a healthy existence (e.g., eating, sleeping, exercise, sexual activity) can also become avenues of escapism when taken to extremes or out of proper context; and as a result the word "escapism" often carries a negative connotation, suggesting that escapists are unhappy, with an inability or unwillingness to connect meaningfully with the world and to take necessary action. [7] Indeed, the Oxford English Dictionary defined escapism as "The tendency to seek, or the practice of seeking, distraction from what normally has to be endured". [8] Cognitive avoidance. It consists of escaping from reality keeping your mind busy. It generally materializes through busy schedules, without a free slot. By saturating ourselves with tasks and obligations, we don’t have time to think or remember what worries us. However, this type of escapism often takes us to the edge of our strength, causing psychological and physical damage due to extreme exhaustion.

Because self-reflection helps you to discover why you are unhappy and what things make you happy. For example, if you’re not happy with your job, you can reflect on what it is about your job that makes you unhappy. You could write down the following two questions:And sometimes you also hurt people around you. But this makes you even more unhappy, wanting you to escape reality and wish for a better life.
