Flashings and copings are fabricated from cold rolled copper in weights ranging between 16 and 20 ounces per square foot. The required weight depends on the application and is outlined in the discussion related to each detail. Drawings are diagrammatic and are intended to establish basic dimension of units, sight lines, and profiles of units. Copper is malleable, strong and has a high resistance to the corrosive effects of mortars and wood- preservatives. Cold rolled copper is recommended rather than soft copper as it offers more resistance to expansion and contraction stresses, although soft copper is useful where there are complex roof shapes. Copper– Longer lasting than aluminium and has the same malleable properties, but it is usually more expensive. It’s most commonly used for chimney flashing.

On nailable sheathing, the flashing should be fastened with wide head nails or cleats. Nailing through flashing prohibits movement and should be avoided when movement is expected. The nail should be driven just above the upper edge of the flashing, allowing its wide head to hold the copper sheet. Nails or cleats should be spaced no more than 12" O.C.
