This is a nice little book that shows you how to follow the Eightfold Path as a layperson. Buddhaby Karen Armstrong. This is a great book to understand the overview of the story of the Buddha. I believe it helps to know the story of the Buddha as you then dive in deeper to each of the ideas and concepts that he taught. After several years of work and effort, Gautama attained enlightenment at the age of 35. This was made possible by being in deep meditation. From then on he spent the rest of his life traveling throughout much of northern India, spreading his teaching of the path to enlightenment. His instruction is known in the East as the Buddha-Dharma (the Teaching of the Enlightened One).

So let me preface this list of the best books on Buddhism for beginners with the fact that I am not a Buddhist. I’m a biocultural anthropologist, and my experience with Buddhism is all academic-based. The closest I’ve come to practicing is the little mantras they pepper in the few yoga classes I go to. Which is to say I haven’t practiced it at all. And, you know, I could sit here and write out a full dissertation on Buddhism, its history, the differences between Theraveda, Mahayana, Esoteric, Zen, etc.
