Sobretodo las repeticiones. Por ello ha sido un mitad sí, mitad no. Miedo, superstición, fanatismo, un paseo por el lado oscuro y retorcido de las personas. Son muy cabrones algunos. La bruja va aparte.

Lo paranormal, la bruja como un ente maligno y con una gran influencia es el mal encarnado, sí, y puede que su aspecto y el suspenso de qué es lo que pretende vagando por más de 300 años en aquel lugar solo sea producto de una venganza o quizás otra cosa. Lo cierto es que da miedo y tiene aterrorizado a todos los habitantes pero lo que queda claro en la medida que avanzas es que las personas que viven en el pueblo son igual o mucho más peores que ella. La prueba viviente está en cómo adoctrinan a los muchachos desde pequeños manteniéndolos en aislamiento, los torturan psicológicamente para que no cometan alguna tontería a favor de la bruja y si incumplen algún decreto serán castigados físicamente. Vamos, que la moral y los derechos básicos son violentados solo por el miedo que supone la figura monstruosa de la bruja. Y sus leyes no tienen nada que envidiarle a los de la edad media ya que lo que hoy en día se considera una persona civilizada aquí es la representación del más puro salvajismo animal e irracional. Aún con sus defectos que le pasaron factura es una historia que merece la pena. Es rara como ella sola. Extravagante. Es original, eso desde luego.. Los personajes hay de todo, muchos es para meterles una galleta en toda la cara. Otros prefieres que se encarge la bruja. Brutalidad, fanatismo, supersticiones, ambientación sobrenatural con una atmósfera oscura y decadente. Eso y más en Hex. And so did the scary aspects of the novel. If you consider something ridiculous, how can you be scared of it?Obviously I can't comment on that decision because I haven't read the original Dutch version of Hex. I didn't particularly feel that the US setting added anything to the story, and that might of course be because I'm Canadian, but I don't think so. As I said above, what makes the book scary is the interaction between the supernatural and human nature, and that would be the same regardless of the setting.

Ni se transmite lo extraordinario que es su encuentro ni se específica claramente cómo es posible que algo tan increíble haya ocurrido. Iris es simplemente una excusa para que Geillis pueda darnos su testimonio. Hay datos que se repiten, desapego emocional en la narración y falta de profundidad en los personajes. En más de una ocasión, me dio la sensación de que la autora daba por hecho que teníamos que saber ciertos detalles de antemano. La familia de Geillis apenas es mencionada y el papel de sus agresores es difuso. Queda claro cómo fue el ataque que sufrió, el cual es totalmente injustificable, pero se da a entender que fue algo que se gestó con anterioridad a raíz de una serie de sucesos. Me hubiera gustado saber mejor el trasfondo de lo que sucedió y cómo esos malnacidos consiguieron que nadie condenara sus actos. Haunting stories have been done numerous times, but this one did offer up something new in my opinion. Puedo afirmar que ha sido la mejor lectura del año, sin ninguna duda. Todo lo que aquí se conjuga es absolutamente aterrador y la forma de narrarlo, absolutamente magnífica 😍

[3] This was a really unique take on a haunting. I enjoyed that aspect of the story so much, as well as the way the town dealt with the issue of the haunting. While re-writing the work to change the setting from Beek, Berg en Dal to New York, Olde Heuvelt also re-wrote and changed the book's ending from the original Dutch version. [4] No one ever does though, as rightly they anticipate her vengeance would be swift and brutal. Why don't they just move away, you wonder? For the translation, HEX has been transposed from the Netherlands, where the original Dutch version takes place, to the United States. This is something I was originally wary of; I feel it sets a dangerous precedent, and that we should be able to relate to stories from other cultures and settings without needing them realigned with our own. However, given the current political climate in the United States, and the subtext of small town fear of outsiders that runs through HEX, I felt that the change actually worked really well and gave the story timely resonance. Rizzio brought out the best in Mina, as this has with Fagan, and I very much look forward to Alan Warner’s offering later this year.
