Make a drinking spot for big and small– alayer of gravel, mud or large flat stones positioned on the shallow sloping side of the pond will create a perfect habitat for amphibians and insects. It also allows birds, hedgehogs and smaller insects such as honeybees and hornets to drink without risk of falling in the water. Considered by many to be the state’s premier live performance venue, the Gendron Franco Center on Cedar Street in Lewiston is a great community resource that should be taken advantage of when you’re visiting the area. The elevated ground on which the powder house sits gives terrific scenic views of the town of Hallowell and the Kennebec River below. Sloping sides– at least one side of the pond should have a long, shallow slope. This allows easy access for wildlife and, when water levels fluctuate, creates a damp habitat for smaller creatures. If you’re making a container pond that isn’t sunk into the ground, add a ramp on the outside and the inside.

The Nezinscot River played an important role in Turner’s development, mainly because its water powered many of the town’s mills that turned raw materials into finished products like lumber and flour. Founded in 2005, Hurricane’s Café and Deli on Route 202 in Greene is the perfect place for weary travelers to take a load off and have a great meal without spending an arm and a leg. Though the mills no longer play a part in the town’s economy, the river is still a focal point, especially for those looking for a variety of outdoor recreation options. The park’s Blue Loop Trail is one of the most used and is just short of four miles long. 10. Most of the exhibits promote activity, which tends to engage children much more than boring ‘look but don’t touch’ ones. There is no public beach on Bear Pond, but the town fathers have set aside a small area at the south end of the pond for public access. The cost of admission is dirt-cheap, and the items on display touch on the state’s history, economy, culture, and the natural world.

Liner – butyl liners are the easiest way to create a natural-shaped pond. Pre-formed plastic or fibreglass ponds don’t usually have a shallow slope (see above), so you would need to add a ramp. For larger, natural ponds consider liners of puddled clay or sodium bentonite. Mid-spring to early summer is the best time for planting, once the water has warmed a little and plants are starting into growth. Phosphorous: Bear Pond's average phosphorus concentration was within the moderate range. Average deep water concentration was within 10 ppm of average core concentrations indicating that phosphorus recycling was not a problem for Bear Pond in 2021. Bear Pond's long term phosphorus trend is decreasing, indicating that there is less phosphorus in the water over time.

14. Children’s Discovery Museum

Central Maine is home to an incredibly diverse variety of native bird species, and the Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary is one of the best places in the area to see and learn about them.

It’s located on Winthrop Street and is managed by the local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. Plants with tall stems for emerging larvae–such as water iris ( Iris ensata). Thelarvae ofdamselflies and dragonfliesneed stems like thistocrawl up when they’re ready to leave the pond and turn into adults.

The park’s trails are open year round. In the winter, they are popular for cross-country skiers and snowshoers.

Pollinator-friendly marginals – such aslesser spearwort ( Ranunculus flammula), flowering rush ( Butomus umbellatus) and marsh marigolds ( Caltha palustris), whose flowers will attract bees, hoverflies and more. The average Secchi disk reading for 2022 was 6.0 meters which falls into the moderately clear range. The average total phosphorus reading of 8.3 ppb falls into the moderate range. The average deep water phosphorus value was not significantly above surface water phosphorus values, which suggests phosphorus recycling is not problematic. The chlorophyll-a average of 2.6 ppb falls into the moderate range. Long-term trend analysis indicates chlorophyll–a concentrations in Bear Pond are stable, total phosphorus concentrations are decreasing, and clarity readings are stable. The average color reading for 2022 was 26.6 SPU, indicating that water in Bear Pond is highly colored. Gloeotrichia echenulata colonies were seen at a density level of 1 in July and at a density level of 2 in August. 2022 Water-testing summary Turner’s Bear Pond is located just off Route 19 and is most well-known for its clean beaches and excellent year-round fishing. In 2017 Weber was sued by former models over claims of sexual harassment during their shoots in the 90s. The cases were settled and Weber denied all accusations, but many of his former brands will no longer work with him.

Like the Androscoggin, the Nezinscot is a popular fishing destination, but it’s also a favorite of canoers, kayakers, swimmers, and bird-watchers.
