Description

I’ll cut to the chase: Barrage is one of those games that is in the discussion for the best release of 2019. There are many that will continue to get that same talk that are a little more accessible such as Tiny Towns, Watergate, and Wingspan. Barrage is further up on the complexity scale compared to those. Turbine Stations: Place 1-3 Engineers to produce Energy. You choose a Conduit (owned by any player) to direct some For the remaining Machineries and Credits available in your supply and the Water Drops held in your Dams. Put the machineries you must use to build that structure in the open segment of your construction wheel, below the tile you have just placed. If you build a Powerhouse or a Base in a building space with a red outlined icon, you must pay 3 extra Credits. Should you discover an income space after building, you will immediately receive that income bonus.

Place the required Engineers in an available action space of your choosing on the Management board, and immediately perform the action corresponding to that space. It costs 2 Concrete Mixers plus 1 extra Concrete Mixer for every Powerhouse you have already built.

Take the first corresponding structure piece from the left of your Company Board and place it in one corresponding available building space on the Map (if you are building an Elevation, place it over one of your existing Dams). Now that the elephant in the room has been discussed, let me get to the subject at hand. Barrage (which, in addition to its normal English meaning, is also the French word for dam) is about generating energy. Specifically, hydro-electricity. The players represent industrialists from four post-WWI powers who believe that the best way of satisfying the enormous power demands of the future will be by harnessing the incredible power of flowing water. They have all gathered at a promising spot in the Alps to test their theories and devices. And getting in the way of one’s rivals is not only satisfying, but could lead to world domination. After taking this action, the player adds the energy produced to her running total for the round. She also gets to fulfill one contract. Each contract shows a minimum energy requirement and a reward; the player can discard one of their contracts which has a requirement equal to or less than the energy produced by that action and claim the reward. Rewards can be VPs, useful items, or even other actions (like adding water drops to the board). Contracts provide the kind of cascading actions that co-designer Simone Luciani has used so successfully in many of his other games.

Place the Map in the center of the table. The side with no icons is recommended once you have mastered the game. It costs 2 Concrete Mixers if built in the Plains area, 3 Concrete Mixers if built in the Hills area and 4 Concrete Mixers if built in the Mountains area. The Water Drops moved to a Powerhouse thanks to the effect of a production action will then follow their natural course flowing through basins, rivers and Dams. When water arrives at a Dam it stops until the Dam is full; however if the Dam is already full the water simply overflows and continues its course towards the lower basins.Take the Technology tile displaying the symbol of the structure you want to build (or the wild symbol) from your supply. If you have neither the Technology tile of a given structure nor a wild tile you cannot build that structure. The remaining actions are all associated with spaces on the central player boards and when a space is taken, it can’t be chosen again until the next round. Spaces are arranged in pairs, with each pair of actions providing the same effect. The second space in each pair either requires more engineers, more money, or both. So even if an opponent chooses the action you want, you can still take it, but at a greater cost.

per water token, and they score 1 VP per water token. After the Energy is produced, you can use it to fulfill 1 Contract Income: Receive bonuses on your player board (you also earn these same bonuses at the time you build the structures). (Water is also placed on the Headstream tiles according the number shown on each tile (not in round 5).) The building structures are nice and chunky and each player has differently styled pieces. This is a good touch, although again, not really required. The two types of machinery are nicely molded, but are very small. This is necessary for them to fit on the production wheels, but most of my opponents disliked them (I thought they were fine). They come in three sizes, to show denominations of 1, 3, and 5 units, but the size differentials aren’t as clear as I’d prefer. Still, they’re playable. Actions: Take turns placing workers and taking actions until all players have placed all 12 of their workers.

I. Income and Headstreams

Water Management: Place 1-2 Engineers to place 1-2 Water on any Headstream(s), to be released during the Water Phase, or place 1 Water on any Headstream, which is then immediately released downstream. When you get a resource (in any way), take it from the general supply and add it to your personal supply (do not put it on the Construction Wheel). The Machineries you get are immediately available to you. If you used an opponent’s Conduit (the only time you can use an opponent’s piece), you must pay them 1 Credit In addition, each player adds up their residual Credits + Excavators + Cement Mixers (not counting those Each player has four types of structures that they will be placing out on the mainboard, which has rivers that flow down from the Alps into basins. Bases act as the first level of the dam, which stops and gathers water in a basin. Elevations are added to Bases so they may hold more water. Conduits act as carriers to get water out of a basin to produce energy and the owning player or the opposition can pay to use the conduit. Powerhouses are where the water flows from the conduit and now produces energy.
