About this deal

Take the very last letter in the collection, joyously scribbled by American Gothic creator Grant Wood, an unassuming Iowan who in 1930 found himself suddenly and irrevocably thrust into the national spotlight. Upon learning that two of his canvases, theretofore seen by no one outside his home state, would be given wall space at a prestigious Chicago Art Institute exhibition, Wood could scarcely contain his enthusiasm. As Stanford art expert Wanda M. Corn puts it, “Wood is so exuberant he forgoes a salutation. ‘Hurray!’ he exclaims in large red-pencil letters, surrounded by a hand-drawn frame.” Wood’s infectious glee complements perfectly the more somber tone of some of his coevals’ writings, providing a yin to their yang. His work is not always illegible, however, he has been known to use phrases from writers such as Gertrude Stein, who experimented extensively with repeated and repetitive language. Letters recorded in ‘Lettere d’Artista’ are either printed or unpublished. Collections of originals are held in repositories in Italy, Europe, and North America. The largest collections surveyed in the project database are held in Archivio di Stato di Roma, the British Library, Archivio di Stato di Lucca, Musée Paul Arbaud, and the Royal Institute of British Architects.

You might find that you view the art side of things after, but you will always be drawn to the words first. Max Rippon / RIPO

His work is contemporary, using silkscreens, ink, and spraypaints to throw up countless letters and messages on canvases. This artist did an excellent job of arranging words and letters in such a way that you can’t help but stare at them. Artists (such as Michel Majerus and pop artists) often used the words they saw around them in popular culture as the inspiration for their work. Collect brand names, slogans or ‘found’ printed words and texts (such as flyers, fast-food leaflets etc.). Use these – or bits of these to reflect popular and consumer culture today. You could use these in an abstract way, ripped up to create visual texture or directly to put across your message or to make point. That I have not liked your notices of me for a considerable time is true, more especially of my ‘Jacob’ this spring, which (if a lady friend who informed me, was correct) curtly stated that I had just finished two pictures ‘ not for the R. A.’, a sort of notice calculated to injure me exceedingly with those touchy gentlemen … I never authorised anyone to trouble you on the subject and you know it is quite contrary to my principles to complain or in anyway interfere with your liberty …. I will never be offended with you whatever annoyance I may feel at your remarks in print unless I were to think they were intended to offend or done in spite. 63 Allowing the book’s myriad of contributors leeway in their commentaries on the assembled letters was, from Savig’s perspective, essential: “I wanted to leave it up to them,” she recalls, “so they could show what they know about the subject, rather than trying to ask them to write specifically about something they might not feel as interested in speaking on.”

Ebon Heath’s work proves that typography art doesn’t have to be legible to make a powerful statement. Their focuses on political improvement and feminism make it easy for them to focus on power. But don’t ever be afraid to put a little spin on the ideas to make the hand lettering reflect your own personal style and your creative voice. Artful Calligraphy The canvas gains a new sense by layering sayings and their removal, often leaving ghostly impressions of previous phrases. The young artist’s works of art dance between being entirely focused on love and passion and then veering into more of a vibrant and bold energy.
