Another reason this book was interesting is being because I used to LIVE near the RAF Wiltshire base. I remember hearing what sounded like gunshots during the days and planes flying overhead at night and staying awake wondering what they were doing just down the road. Well, I guess I found out. There were moments that made me want to scream (mostly when she was judged as “a woman” not for her ability), and times that really warmed my heart (such as the evening when her team rallied round to help her grasp the finer points of formation flying).

Mandy concludes the book with the story about student Emily and the best way for me to sum this up is with a Star Wars analogy when Darth Vader says to Obi-Wan, now I am the master and Mandy has come full circle, as a master pilot, through her incredible career and being a trailblazer to be in a position to offer encouragement, mentorship and guidance to the next generation following in her footsteps. Unbeknownst to the 30-year-old actor at the time was that he would go on to become one of the most famous leading men of his generation and star in some of the most successful movies of all time.Speaking at a film festival in 2012, Richard said: "Every once and awhile, I could be jet lagged somewhere all over the world and An Officer and a Gentleman is playing on MTV in the middle of the night and I’ll watch a scene or two. An Officer, Not a Gentleman is a very easy to read, eye-opening & amusing biography and the writing style is very much as though Mandy is speaking to you, telling her story as obstacle after obstacle were put in her way & she trampled over them, never giving up on her dream. Time after time, she proved that women are just as good as men! Since then the New York native has been continuously working and boasts an acting resume that spans over five decades in TV, film and stage. Although this book is mainly marketed at being female in a male dominated subsection of society, I’m happy to see Mandy’s own take on it. She doesn’t focus on it too much and just gets on with the job - She doesn’t really see gender even though is sometimes acutely reminded of it. Everyone responds to integrating in different ways, Mandy’s was to ‘try and be one of the lads’ which is completely valid.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this audiobook free from the publisher via NetGalley. Whilst thanks go to the publisher for the opportunity to read it, all opinions are my own. I actually went from start to finish in one sitting. Seriously, I had listened to the opening of the book and decided that I needed to put aside the time and was not disappointed. After filming was wrapped in Washington in 1981, Richard Gere was already becoming a big star in the US box office thanks to his 1980 hit American Gigolo. Conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman (or conduct unbecoming for short) is an offense that is subject to court martial in the armed forces of some nations. The 65-year-old actress now lives with her husband, actor Arliss Howard, and their two sons on their working farm in Sullivan County, New York.Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook – having the author read it makes it so much more personal & it’s not only a great story but also includes some excellent life lessons! I really loved “Emily’s story” – a moment when Mandy was able to inspire a teenager who also had a dream to fly Since then Debra has worked as a teaching fellow at Harvard, has starred in Netflix's 2016 hit The Ranch and has worked as an executive producer on documentary films. While I am an aviation enthusiast, this is not just for those who love aircraft! I think anyone (especially women) could appreciate her struggle and her persistence. It is inspiring. Women do hard things and they work twice as hard to get where they want to be. I applaud Mandy for getting to the dizzy heights of a Tornado Pilot at a time when equality was maybe just starting to change a bit for the better. My father was in the RAF and was based at Cottesmore when it was trinational tornado training (TTTE). When he retired after full service I wondered as a kid where I possibly would have ended up had he been in for longer. In Lossie!

Previously to playing Paula in An Officer and a Gentleman, Debra Winger was nominated for both a BAFTA and a Golden Globe for her role in Urban Cowboy with John Travolta in 1980 - not bad her for second ever film role! See more: When Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta reunited after 24 years to sing ‘You’re The One That I Want’ Being a female training in such a male dominated environment certainly had its challenges and the author makes light of the times she was singled out for her many failings or misdemeanours, instead focusing on the positives and carrying on, determined to reach her goal. From parade squares, kit inspections and crawling around in damp undergrowth to the dizzy heights of achieving her dreams this was an inspiring read. David Keith's breakout role in An Officer and a Gentleman in 1982 earned him nominations for two Golden Globe Awards. But I haven’t watched the whole movie since we made it. I think there’s stuff in here that isn’t usually seen. Like stuff in the beginning in the Philippines and the beginning with my father. A lot of that stuff I don’t think is ever shown. Wikipedia Conduct unbecoming - Wikipedia

The phrase was used as a charge in courts martial of the British Armed Forces in the 18th and the early 19th centuries although it was not defined as a specific offence in the Articles of War. [1] For instance, in 1813, Colonel Sir J Eamer was brought before a court martial "For behaving in a scandalous, infamous manner, such as is unbecoming the character of an officer and a gentleman, towards Captain B V Symes of the same regiment..." [2] The charge seems to have been first codified under the Naval Discipline Act of 10 August 1860, [3] which states, "Article 24: Every Officer subject to this Act who shall be guilty of Cruelty, or of any scandalous or fraudulent Conduct, shall be dismissed with Disgrace from Her Majesty's Service; and every Officer subject to this Act who shall be guilty of any other Conduct unbecoming the Character of an Officer shall be dismissed, with or without Disgrace, from Her Majesty's Service." [4] Use in the United States [ edit ] In 1995, aged 40, Debra decided to take a break from acting and after Rosanna Arquette released a critically acclaimed documentary called Searching for Debra Winger in 2002, she returned to acting, playing Anne Hathaway's mother in Rachel's Getting Married. Staten Island native Salvatore "Robert" Loggia was born in 1930 and had a long career spanning over six decades. Of particular interest to me what is the institutional growth that had to take place along with that of Mandy and her peers. This book also includes some incredible hysteria, some military hysteria and some just funny hijinks that I loved and at times I was laughing so hard I was crying.

Unsportsmanlike conduct, a cautionable offence in association football, until 1997 called "ungentlemanly conduct". [8] It’s an easy read. Enjoyable at times but from a personal point a bit annoying also. I’m ex army and for me it just reinforces the divide between the forces when it comes down to the hard life the raf have of having to go to Vegas and partying all the time. Rubbing shoulders with the Saudi royal family one night and just popping over the yacht the next day on a flight. Then say how tough life is sat in “slipper city”. It’s a bit insulting but that’s the choice of profession.
