About this deal

The Deco X60 has a four-stream 5GHz network running at a maximum of 2404Mbps (600.5Mbps a stream), but the 2.4GHz network is much slower with two 287Mbps streams (574Mbps in total). Even so, across all devices, that gives you a total of 18 streams to play with. Key specs – Nodes (as reviewed): 2; Claimed coverage: 372m²; Maximum nodes supported: Not stated; 2.4GHz speed: 600Mbits/sec; 5GHz speed: 1,200Mbits/sec; MIMO channels: 2×2; Ethernet ports: 3 x GbE (router), 2 x GbE (satellite); Guest network: Yes; Parental controls: No; Works with Alexa: Yes; IPv6: Not stated; Custom IP range: Not stated; Client IP reservation: Not stated; Port forwarding: Not stated; 2.4GHz/5GHz band splitting: No; Warranty: 1yr For performance testing, we connect a NAS appliance to the main mesh unit via Ethernet, and then wirelessly connect to the mesh network from a laptop equipped with an Intel Wi-Fi 6E network card, with support for 2×2 MIMO. We take this laptop to various rooms in the home, copy a series of files to and from the NAS system, and measure read and write speeds to discover the peak performance the mesh system is able to deliver, at different ranges and via different access points. The UltraCut FBS II 6 is approved for multiple use of non-load bearing systems and thereby ideal for the installation of pipe routes, cable trays and prestressed hollow concrete ceilings.

It ultimately runs the risk of being a halfway house between truly affordable Wi-Fi 5 systems and the full performance of a top-range Wi-Fi 6 mesh, but if you’re looking for a budget-conscious Wi-Fi 6 system, you will find the Netgear Orbi RBK352 to be a solid choice. It’s also cheaper than the other systems I’ve reviewed, showing Wi-Fi 6 prices are starting to drop. The system’s strength lies in its ease of use – everything is managed via the excellent TP-Link Tether app – and its unusually broad selection of features. Not only do you get decent Wi-Fi coverage with the Deco X20 but it also comes with baked-in parental controls and antivirus protection for the whole of your network. The lower price of this mesh system compared to the other Wi-Fi 6 mesh devices can be seen when you look at the wireless specs. More expensive systems use a dedicated wireless link between satellites, but the X60 has single 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, which are shared between clients and as the transmission between satellites.

The design of the concrete screw with panhead and large panhead allows for a visually aesthetic installation. As far as traffic management goes, that’s slightly less impressive. There’s nowhere where you can see a meaningful breakdown and analysis of who and what is using up bandwidth. There is, however, an easy to use QoS (quality of service) feature, which allows you to set certain devices as “High Priority” and prioritise certain types of traffic over others at a network level. Depending on your needs, you may not need to invest in the fastest, most expensive kit you can find. Even a low-cost Wi-Fi 5 mesh system should be fast enough to deliver a connection of 40Mbits/sec or more around your home, which is plenty for working, browsing the web and even streaming 4K video. It’s clear to see that the TP-Link Deco X60 is the more effective mesh system than the Nighthawk, especially at close range. That’s what you’d expect given the higher speed rating of the X60. Speeds in the kitchen and living room were, surprisingly, closer together but the X60 eked out a lead again outside on the patio, suggesting it’s a more effective system for larger homes.

TP-Link Deco X60 review: A competent Wi-Fi 6 mesh | Expert

Physical connectivity is a tad limited. Each node has only a pair of network ports, there’s no USB sharing, or even a WPS button. For the price, though, the TP-Link Deco X20 is a great system with plenty of features and fast enough speeds for daily life. On price alone, the TP-Link Deco X60 is something of a bargain compared to other Wi-Fi 6 systems, but whether or not it’s the right system for you depends on what you need. Overall, the far more expensive Orbi Wi-Fi 6 is faster, particularly at range thanks to its dedicated wireless connection between satellites. It also has the more powerful 2.4GHz band. The Deco X20 is a dual-band system supporting 2×2 MIMO, which helps to keep the costs down, but since WiFi 6 is designed to share bandwidth more efficiently across multiple connections, this shouldn’t be a huge problem. All three satellites are identical, although you have to choose one as the main device. This must be connected to your internet modem via an Ethernet connection, although if you don’t want to (or can’t) replace your existing router, you can plug the first Deco into your router instead. If you don’t replace your router, you should disable your existing Wi-Fi.

The first 6 mm diameter concrete screw with an ETA assessment for the C1 seismic performance category for additional safety standards. A status light on the front of the satellite tells you if the satellite is connected, but you can use the app to see a better signal strength meter, and reposition your satellites if you don’t get a good connection. The system acts as a wireless extender system for your existing router, connecting via a simple Gigabit Ethernet cable. This means it doesn’t mess with your network settings, and there’s very little to configure – although the system does offer a guest network facility and simple group-based parental controls. The nodes look a bit odd, standing upright like mini-satellite dishes, but their small footprint means it’s easy to find suitable places for them around the home. Strangely, neither the app nor the web interface gives you the option to change which channels the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks operate on. All you can do is change the wireless name and enable/disable the guest network. TP-Link Deco X60 Performance – Great coverage, but not the fastest Wi-Fi 6 systemFor your main device, as you have to use one Gigabit Ethernet port, you only have one spare for other devices. It’s likely, then, that you’ll need to buy an additional switch. Having two Gigabit Ethernet ports on the other satellites isn’t as much of a restriction, giving you the option of connecting additional wired devices. The first concrete screw with diameter 6 and variable embedment depths enables high flexibility and a precise adaption on the loads. The Halo H80X is a fantastic debut from TP-Link’s value-oriented Mercusys brand – a full-featured Wi-Fi 6 mesh system for an irresistible price. As the name suggests, mesh systems are also designed to support multiple nodes, which can be deployed in a “daisy-chain” configuration, rather than each one needing a direct connection to the router. This makes it easy to extend a wireless connection over a huge area by simply placing nodes at regular intervals around your home or workplace. Will a mesh system work with my router?

We test mesh Wi-Fi systems by setting them up just as you would in a regular home. The primary unit is connected directly to an incoming fibre broadband line, while the second is located according to the manufacturer’s recommendations – normally one or two rooms away. If there’s a third node, this will be placed in another room, creating either a star or daisy-chain topology.

The special double angle on the under-head geometry increases the stability of the concrete screw during screwing in. It was then a simple matter of plugging the other satellites in where I wanted them, and they joined the first one automatically creating my mesh network. Other things we liked about the system include the fact that there are four Gigabit Ethernet ports on each unit and that these are located on the rear rather than on the base of the units, making them easier to access. There are basic parental controls here, too, however we didn’t like the way the web interface was laid out.
