If you are adding leaves, put your green frosting in a piping bag fitted with a leaf tip. Add a few leaves in clumps around the side of the cupcake – this is a great time to hide any small errors or uneven edges. Step 5: Use gentle, even pressure as you spiral the frosting from the center to the outer edge of the cupcake. As you reach the edge, stop squeezing and gently pull away, so the frosting “tail” tapers off into the side. Our recipes are developed using weight measurements, and we highly recommend using a kitchen scale for baking whenever possible. However, if you prefer to use cups, volume measurements are provided as well. PLEASE NOTE: the adage “8 oz = 1 cup” is NOT true when speaking about weight, so don’t be concerned if the measurements don’t fit this formula. This is the most popular way to use the 1M tip (my favorite tip by far). Build a rosette base and then build upward, getting narrower as you go. (Notice the different colors in the first one? I put two different colors of frosting into my piping bag.) You can make the perfect swirl! In the tutorial below I pipe 4 buttercream swirls with both the 1M (in the darker pink) and the 2D (in the lighter pink) . They have a similar style but are slightly different. Looking at a very classic swirl the 1M gives the appearance of an ice cream swirl, with straight edges working up to a point, whereas the 2D creates a more soft, ruffled effect. So it just depend on the type of cupcake you are looking to make and which one you prefer.

How to Assemble a Piping Bag and Tip

To create a rosette cake, you will pipe rosettes using the 1M tip all over the sides of the cake as well as the top of the cake.
