Like many Sony wireless earbuds, the WF-C700N offer Sony’s Adaptive Sound Control feature which allows the earbuds to automatically switch listening modes depending on your location. Both pairs of earbuds are once again punching above their weight in this department, so things really come down to a question of value for money. A split decision might be the fairest option when price is factored into the equation. It’s managed to build a nice little portfolio of wireless earbuds that hit a number of key price points. When Ambient is deployed, you can select from 1-20 on a slider (I keep mine at around 12 when 'Walking' to my train and 20 when 'Running') and these work very well indeed. When ANC is on, at my desk, all but the loudest noises are softened, leaving me immersed in my playlists. It's a feat and no mistake.

Impactful equaliser options mean they’re a more customisable proposition than similarly priced rivals like the Redmi Buds Pro 4 and the Huawei Freebuds too, even if touch control customisation options could be more extensive. The C500 (the dear old nanna in this scenario) offer phenomenal value for money, providing more features and far better audio fidelity at the price than almost any other rival on the market today. They're also so well made they'll probably continue giving you that same great sound decades from now. That won't happen here. In fact, with the WF-C700N, Sony just ripped my notions on what is achievable at this level to smithereens. Some of the best noise-cancelling earbudsof the year, then? Indeed. Can they be bettered by rivals? Yes, but not for this money. You'll have to set your sights much farther up the food chain if you want to beat this suite of features and sound quality.You can also easily control the volume by pushing the right button 4 times or more to turn it up, or by pushing the left button 4 times or more to turn the volume down. The volume control function may require future firmware updates. * My other grumble relates to the WF-C700N’s battery life. Seven-and-a-half hours of in-ear stamina is ample, but total playtime of around fifteen hours is below average and means you’ll need to top up the charging case more frequently than you might like. That didn’t detract too much from my overall experience but may prove a deal breaker for those wanting buds capable of lasting a couple of weeks without needing a top up.
These are some of the most easy to wear, comfortable earbuds I've ever had the pleasure of wearing, a fact which shouldn't be a huge surprise given the Sony LinkBuds S are another firm favorite for my smaller ears. While a little fuller over the body, they fit without having to stretch my ear or screw them in, in any way. And thanks to the new material (which Sony says "holds on to the inner cup of your ear") they stay put for hours on end. It's not a total disaster here for the C500, though, as while they're incapable of any form of ANC, they do at least offer voice control and hands-free calling, and with a high-quality microphone built in, that's still a really handy feature at such a small price. Make sure you have the latest firmware updated on your headphones so any bug fixes and improvements will be applied.What you do get with the WF-C500 are the essentials and then some – namely Bluetooth 5.0 (compatible with SBC and AAC codecs), 10 hours' worth of earbud-only charge, an IPX4 waterproof rating and even voice-assistant control. Considering the price point, that's a Swiss-army-knife level of kit. Both buttons also offer an easy way to access your smartphone's voice assistant and receive calls hands-free.
