Pugh may well have expected rejection as he wrote of Mary's "double heart" in the poetry. But those who hoped for a happy ending can take heart from the fact that Mary did at least save the poetry. His life was mythologised in the mid 16th century by Elis Gruffydd and is written as a shaman or magician. Growing up, he received a bursary to study at the University College of North Wales, where he read Latin. Then, in 1936 he was ordained as a priest in the Anglican Church in Wales. Sheers was born in Fiji in 1974 but grew up in Abergavenny, South Wales. The award-winning poet is an exciting presence in contemporary Welsh poetry.

Although, surprisingly, he never chose to formally publish the poem.

While he was born in Haverfordwest, he spent most of his life living in Mynachlog-ddu in Pembrokeshire after moving there at age seven in 1911. Welsh Poets and Welsh Poetry
The poet Ronald Stuart Thomas (1913-2000) was a passionate, and sometimes militant, defender of Welsh language and culture. And yet he wrote dazzlingly in English, publishing more than 1,500 poems in over 20 volumes of a 50-year writing career. Born in Cardiff, Thomas worked as an Anglican priest, moving parishes further north and west in Wales until he could move no further: he settled at Aberdaron on the very tip of the Llŷn peninsula. Unlike his namesake Dylan, RS’s poems employ a language of stark simplicity and great beauty. He received the Queen’s Gold medal for poetry in 1964 and was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1996. 10.Sarah Waters Welsh poetic forms and metres are grandiloquent, challenging and dense, which is great for praising a king and narrating stories. Modern poetry has moved beyond this form-led poetry to a more open style – after all, not many want to read a poem where they can guess the next rhyme – but these poetic forms and metre still have their place in the country. Each year, the words and lines of these poems are brought to life at the National Eisteddfod music and poetry festival, which remains a large part of Welsh culture. Owen Sheers (1974 - present) The work of the National Poet of Wales is varied. This includes receiving commissions to write poems for different themes and occasions; taking part in events and festivals in Wales and abroad; taking a leading role in literary projects and campaigns; running workshops and meeting a wide variety of people at official events. As well-known as these intricate styles may be, over many centuries the people of Wales developed a unique set of patterns all of their own. Unlike most English language forms, these focus on the sounds produced within a line and the echoes left after, rather than just on the words themselves. The parchment, covered in fine calligraphic script and detailing Hugh Pugh's doomed love for Mary Fisher, hung on a family's wall for generations.
In time past, a farm hand called ‘W.H.’ carved pictures of ships on the slate stones of a cowshed at Lasynys Fawr. According to the museum, this work belongs to a subset of folk art called True Lover's Knots, whose hallmarks include minute handwriting, fancy scrollwork, and messages of love arrayed around a labyrinth. A reader can begin anywhere and, turning the piece, experience a continuous flow of tender thoughts. It offers a unique insight into the rites of courtship in the American colonies where thousands of young Welsh workers headed in the 18th and 19th centuries - in this case St Clair, a tiny village in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
