About this deal

While usually grown for its foliage and trailing or crawling habit, it does display bright yellow flowers in the summer. At DIY Gardening, we follow a detailed, rigorous process to create content that is helpful, factually correct and meets the highest standard of integrity. My experience: I’ve had issues growing Lobelia in semi-shade before, where it struggled to perform. It did much better once I moved it to a sunny spot. I’ve seen ivy can grow just about everywhere, along walls, down the side of pots, trailing below hanging baskets and even along the ground. My experience: I tried this plant in 2020, and while trailing heuchera didn’t trail as much as I had hoped, the deep red and brown colours added lots of punch.

Aubrieta ‘Cascade Purple’ - Rock Cress Plant Profile for Aubrieta ‘Cascade Purple’ - Rock Cress

Busy lizzies are a reliable summer flowering annual that’s guaranteed to put an impressive show in full sun or shade.Aubretia flowers are in shades of light blue, mauve and pink and some varieties have variegated foliage, all are low-growing, small plants. This list was thoughtfully compiled by gardener Hannah Miller and reviewed by horticulturist Elizabeth Smith. Published to Ideas on the 14th March 2021. Updated: 5th February 2023. Aubrieta prefers neutral or slightly alkaline soil that is normal, sandy or chalky but always free-draining. This plant will provide nectar and pollen for bees and the many other types of pollinating insects.

How to Grow and Care for Aubrieta - The Spruce

Water when first planted but once established it should take care of itself. Top dress with a 50/50 mixture of horticultural sand and leaf mould with a small handful of lime added, in spring. Once it has finished flowering shear it over to keep it nice and tight and prevent it going straggly, just don’t go right into the old woody growth. It should then grow new leaves which will keep the nice tight cushion form. Propagation My experience: I stopped growing busy lizzies for several years due to horrendous downy mildew diseases that destroyed them. However, growers have now produced disease-resistant plants, and I’ve seen first-hand that they perform much better. This trailing bacopa plant is the perfect companion and is often used to hang over the edges of tubs where the hundreds of small daisy-like blooms complement, but do not distract from the other plants in the pot.

Aubrieta at Thompson-Morgan Aubrieta at Thompson-Morgan

Hannah Miller has been a gardening enthusiast for over 12 years and has a level 3 qualification in horticulture. She's constantly growing new plants and frequently writes for us. Key points: A stunning but rarely seen perennial with copper colours on display in the autumn which compliment small white panicles in the summer months. Take cuttings from mid to late summer by pulling off a shoot. They seem to take better if pulled off with a heel rather than being cut. Select a shoot with a nice rosette of leaves at the top and about 5 - 10cm (2 - 4”) of brown stem. Place it in a really gritty cutting compost, add extra grit if necessary, and place it in a cold frame to root. ProblemsIt is easy to get cuttings from Aubretia. Often they send out little plantlets around them and you can pot these up to grow on for planting out later when they have a mature root. Also Aubretia root easily trim off a cutting a few centimetres long in midsummer and root into well-drained compost. Let the plant grow on to a mature size in a suitable container, and then it is ready for planting out.
