Phegley, Kiel (2013-04-30). "Tynion Taps The Horror of "The Eighth Seal" ". CBR . Retrieved 2022-07-13. Shout-Out: In Issue 4, David is wearing Ferris Bueller's Iconic Outfit, having apparently requested it from Walter via the notepad. The Nice House on the Lake, written by James Tynion IV (!) and Álvaro Martínez Bueno, with Jordie Bellaire on colors, is part of the Tynion wave sweeping the current phase of comics. Tynion, one of the two or three “it” people in comics now, was just awarded 2022 Eisner Awards for Best Writer, Best continuing Series (Something is Killing the Children), and Best New Series, this one. He’s this year’s Jeff Lemire, I guess.

With Something Is Killing the Children and The Department of Truth, James Tynion IV has changed the face of horror in modern comics—now get ready for his most ambitious story yet, alongside his Detective Comics partner Álvaro Martínez Bueno! It seems to have landed with a thud for most others, but after adjusting to breadcrumb storytelling of long arc comics, it didn’t come as a surprise to me, especially after the first volume, that there would be a twist but not a resolution. I’m still interested in what comes after this major part and think it resolved some things that made it even more incredulous than things asserted beforehand. I’m not entirely sure it can navigate to the future where they’re clearly in a further future, and it’s basically some kind of dystopia hunger games thing, but the journey there, so far, is enticing enough. Retrieved 2022-07-13.Driven to Suicide: The guests can request items from Walter by writing on a notepad. Molly requests a gun, a rope and then a straight razor when her requests for her husband and parents alive and well aren't granted. Walter repeatedly refuses these requests, until David gets the razor for her by asking for it on his own notepad. Although it turns out they can't actually die, so it doesn't matter whether she gets the razor or not. Barbarian, 2022's most messed-up horror movie, is getting a single-player video game from the Friday the 13th and Evil Dead: The Game devs To sum it up through comparison: The Nice House on the Lake is basically Lawrence Kasdan’s The Big Chill by way of Michael Schur’s The Good Place and Stephen King’s It; an apocalyptic mystery thriller that reads like a better version of Lost as told through the medium of comics. The focal point of these disparate influences is Walter, the series’ antagonist and one of the most intriguing comic book villains in recent memory. Image: James Tynion IV, Álvaro Martínez Bueno/DC Comics All of them were at that moment in their lives when they could feel themselves pulling away from their other friends; wouldn’t a chance to reconnect be…nice? In The Nice House on the Lake, the overriding anxieties of the 21st century get a terrifying new face—and it might just be the face of the person you once trusted most. I went into this without any knowledge other than it was a horror comic and I really think that served me well.

In 2022, he won three Eisner Awards for his work. He is also a nine-time nominee for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book, the most nominations of any writer, winning once in 2016. I think that's all that kept it from being 5 stars, though. The story is unique, and the characters are pretty interesting if not wholly fleshed out. Adams, Tim (2020-07-30). "James Tynion IV Announces Digital Horror Anthology, Razorblades - And You Choose Your Price". CBR . Retrieved 2022-07-13. Pieced together over the six issues, these stories paint a complicated portrait of Walter; a being of immense power conflicted with his own role in the imminent culling of humanity. He admits at one point that he did not think that he would come to like, let alone love, so many of the people he crossed paths with during his time on Earth. Beneath his cool and aloof exterior, there appears to be a war raging inside of Walter; a growing sympathy and compassion for humanity pitted against the ruthless machinations of his unseen superiors.

Andreeva, Nellie (2016-12-02). " 'The Woods' TV Series Based On Boom! Comic In Works At Syfy With Brad Peyton". Deadline . Retrieved 2022-07-13. Unfortunately, he fell into the same trap of having set up something so large, so earthshaking, that he had to come up with an explanation-heavy and over-complicated plot device to bring it to a (sort of) ending. One of the social media posters says his brother was on Twitch when his eyeballs melted. Another mentions that her skin is coming off on her phone screen as she types.

Fantastic set-up for a weird end-of-the-world story. A group of people each with their own different skills or expertises are brought to, well, a nice house on a lake. The only thing they really have in common is a friendship (however dated) with the home's owner Walter. Intrepid Reporter: Sam 'the Reporter' is the one most determined to solve the mystery of the House and its separation from the world. And then there was the explanations of all the machinations behind the scenes. To be honest, I actually feel like I would have enjoyed this more if Tynion and company had actually left this part unexplained and let the readers create their own theories as to what was going on.
