About this deal

There remained many open fields and streams and ponds where a boy could catch minnows and frogs, or see a firefly at night. It was about a mile and a half to Breton Downs School, which Chris walked to every day and attended until 6th grade, when the Van Allsburg family moved again.

Some of the images do evoke a sense of danger in them. 'Under The Rug' shows a man ready to hit whatever is under the rug coming for him. Looking at 'Mr. Linden's Library,' the vines coming out the book are very ominous along with the caption stating it's now too late for the girl asleep next to the book. From the award-winning author of Jumanji and The Polar Express, Chris Van Allsburg challenges young readers to use their creativity and imagination in this one-of-a-kind book that asks readers to finish the story.Enticed to come up with their own endings, readers will marvel at the mystery behind these lasting drawings and the charm of an everchanging narrative. Following the letter, fourteen mysterious and haunting images are reproduced, each with a title and a suggestive caption. Next to a drawing of a boy fast asleep in his bedroom with five small, round lights hovering in the air above him are the title “Archie Smith, Boy Wonder” and the caption “A tiny voice asked, ‘Is he the one?'” An image of a huge ocean liner pushing into a narrow canal is titled “Missing in Venice” and captioned “Even with her mighty engines in reverse, the ocean liner was pulled further and further into the canal.” The picture from “The Third-Floor Bedroom”, accompanied by the words “It all began when someone left the window open,” shows a room that looks completely normal but for the wallpaper bird that seems to be coming to life and flying off the wall!

The Mysteries of Harris Burdick – HarperCollins

I just read the entire Chris Van Allsburg collection today, and I feel that since it was multiple picture books I’ll count them all as one single entry in my reading challenge. The book is available in a Portfolio Edition which includes another image/caption pair from the story "Missing in Venice". illustrations. 14 captions. A picture book, then? Yes, but each scene is a loaded gun and you are the trigger. Sometimes dreams contain excellent story ideas. Invite your students to record ideas in their notebooks that come to them in dreams.

Me recordó lo mágicas que pueden ser las formas y las palabras cuando de usan correctamente o en conjunto. Instead of having each student use an individual notebook, create a class list of ideas on chart paper to which students can refer. Instead of asking them to write stories based on ideas the class comes up with, you may want to have very young children tell the stories out loud. You can take dictation, and the students can illustrate their stories—or you can simply leave them as oral storytelling experiences. Have the children use ideas they have written in their notebooks to write stories of their own. When they are finished, ask them to illustrate what they have written.

Biscuit and the Lost Teddy Bear

All the publisher is left with is the illustrations with a title and caption for each picture, leaving the reader to use their imagination to create the story behind the picture and connect the stories together. Chris Van Allsburg is one of my must-collect illustrators, as I just love his work. He combines detail with imagination and he has never let me down. While I still rank Queen Of The Falls as his best, this mysterious book of wordless stories comes very close.
