The Dinner Lady Detectives by Hannah Hendy is a fabulous contemporary cozy mystery that is just perfect in every way! This is a debut book for Ms. Hendy and the start, of what I expect, will be a fantastic series and literary career. Margery and Clementine Butcher-Baker are coming to the end of another busy half term as dinner ladies at Summerview Secondary school. The school is abuzz with chatter about the upcoming break, the local harvest festival, and the fact that maths teacher, Mr Weaver, hasn't turned up to work in days.

Our servers are getting hit pretty hard right now. Highly recommended for those of you who want a break from all the doom, gloom and violence in many crime fiction books and who don't mind a bit of dark humour. Dinner ladies Margery and Clementine have lived together for more than 30 years in Dewstow and both work in the kitchen of a local school, Summerview Secondary. When their manager, Caroline Hughes dies in a mysterious accident, unperturbed by the danger they could find themselves in, the pair decide to investigate. I clearly read far too many dark and twisty books, as this wasn’t quite there for me in terms of thrills, BUT it wasn’t meant to be - and for that, I thoroughly enjoyed it!This was my first time reading books by Hannah Hendy and I can’t wait to read the other books in the dinner lady detectives series. To be fair, this was a much-needed palette cleanser after quite a few rather heavy books! It was light,, funny, quirky and had Richard Osman-style vibes - a cosy, autumnal read! I really did like the main characters, and the mystery was certainly fun to go along with! It is the fourth book in a series which did worry me slightly, as I haven’t read the others, but apart from spoiling the previous books (to be fair you can’t have a series without referencing past outcomes!) it worked as a stand-alone which I was grateful for!

I loved seeing Seren stand up for herself finally. The side characters of the series all have plenty to bring to the dynamic. This is my first dinner lady detectives book and although reference was made to previous books in the series, the book explained in enough detail the premise of what happened so you were able to get the jist of what had happened. Middle-aged mystery solving dinner ladies - what’s not to like! I loved the idea of this as its so different. I was not disappointed. British Culture, showed everywhere throughout the book in the perfect amount of understanding as a non-English. Especially the iconic thing about British people love when it comes about "Tea"Those looking for a light, corny mystery featuring a cranky couple who don't seem capable of solving a crime may enjoy following them along in their escapades. Finally, the solution was rather out of left field and came in an info dump near the end. All the clues that were followed were pointless, basically. Had me hooked from the start right until the end. It was just a lovely cosy read that felt like coming home on a cold and dark night . I loved it.' ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Dinner Lady Detectives, Margery and Clementine Butcher-Baker find themselves twisted up in the suspicious murder of Mr Weaver. I have loved every other book in this series so I had high hopes for this one, and it didn't disappoint.I really liked how this one talked about the ongoing trauma the Butcher-Baker ladies were facing after the events of book 3 and how they came to the realisation they both needed some support. This is, in my humble opinion, a very successful debut and definitely a series that I am looking forward to keeping up with. It is described as "a delightful, quintessentially British cosy mystery" and that's exactly what you get. The main characters, Clementine (fantastic name) and Margery were... just okay. Deep characterisation is hindered by incorrectly utilised humour, and they didn't really seem like a couple to me. I know they've been together thirty years and I'm not expecting them to be all lovey-dovey like they're in the honeymoon period, but I expect some chemistry.
