While Golden mostly views humans as a source of food and fun, Silver is the tragic romantic who falls in love with a human, surgically replacing her tail with legs and losing her voice as a result. A deeply feminist gothic tale that also finds grim humor in objectification, director Agnieszka Smoczynska makes having — and doing — it all look easy… on-screen, at least. Other legends originated in Western and Eastern Europe, Byzantine, Greece, China, Korea, and more. In Korea, a country that’s surrounded by water on three sides, there are stories of mermaids with human features. For example, a story of a mayor saving four mermaids from a fisherman and an underwater kingdom known as Naranda. But the ensuing mermaid craze obviously didn’t come out of a vacuum; legends have been circulating for centuries about merpeople in one form or another, whether as sexually enchanting sirens luring sailors to their deaths or benevolent beings so fascinated by humans they become the ideal lovers. They’re much like vampires in the way that they provide endless potential to explore the fine line between the human and the alien, and they can even take it further by acting as metaphors for the vast, still unexplored regions of the ocean and nature itself. Irish mythology brings us the story of Li Ban – a human who was turned into a mermaid after a terrible disaster. In early Ireland, Li Ban and her family lived in a small house with her family some time around the year 858 BC. They lived a simple but happy life until one fateful day when an underwater spring erupted underneath their house. The powerful water that gushed upwards caused all of her family members to drown – only Li Ban and her lap dog managed to survive the flooding. There was so much water that erupted from the underwater spring that the land where Li Ban and her family had lived was transformed into what is now Lough Neagh.

But the heart of the film lies in its emphasis on the history of artistic resistance to fascism, and the redemptive power of not only love but imagination in the face of an isolating modern world. And apparently Parisians rival New Yorkers in their ability to completely disregard a mermaid tail when they see it. Give Disney some credit; it knows how to keep this story enchanting. It can’t cover for the fact that the new Little Mermaid is far too derivative of an iconic story that’s already been told, but Halle Bailey is a wonder as Ariel, whose fascination with humans leads her to give up her voice so she can gain legs and be with her prince. The Porthleven Mermaid Day is organised by Suzie Inman, 43, a copywriter, PR and marketing professional. For Suzie, the catalyst was her 40th birthday. She had saved for a year to buy a tail and says, “I wanted to mark the event and do something for me.” She has lived in Cornwall for 13 years, but grew up in Lytham, Lancashire, where her grandfather was a fisherman. “We were taught to respect the sea, and we didn’t swim in it much, because there are some deep tidal patterns round there,” she says. She did, however, swim in pools. As a little girl she was always the one to dive and retrieve lost jewellery from the deep end. As a teenager she swam competitively for Lancashire.

Origins of the Myth

After many years of service, Atargatis fell in love with a mortal shepherd boy and desired to make a union with him. Unfortunately, she did not realize that as a mortal, he wouldn’t be able to survive ‘the divine lovemaking.’ She accidentally killed him and fell into a deep state of grief. In a bittersweet turn of events, she also became pregnant with his daughter. Numerous publications throughout the history of included mermaids, or mermaid-like beings. One Thousand and One Nights is a famous example. In this collection of Arabic stories, there is mention of “sea people.” Eventually Melusine found a love of her own and agreed to marry him if he promised not to look upon her on Saturdays. He agreed and kept the promise for many years. One day however, he too became curious and went to see what she was doing. She forgave him for a time, but when he called her a serpent during a fight she disappeared, never to be seen again. Merpeople in One Thousand and One Nights Though it is tempting to put a label on the intentions of these creatures, it appears that many mermaids have free will and are not motivated by primal desires to hurt or help. Because of this, it is difficult to determine what their intentions are without interaction. Atargatis – The First Mermaid

As Hanks’ workaholic, closed-off Allen and Hannah’s free-spirited mermaid, who takes the name Madison, tour ’80s-era New York City, their ensuing journey is one of director Ron Howard’s sweetest comedic love stories. Nevermind that Hannah’s mermaid can only be human on land for a mere seven days; Allen and Madison’s connection feels written in the stars and the waves. Plus, there’s supporting players John Candy and Eugene Levy, who give their all.

In the 2nd century, some claimed that mermaid corpses were washing up on the beaches. Their bodies were covered with scales. In Pliny the Elder’s writings, he mentions that the Governor of Gaul even wrote a letter toEmperor Augustusto inform him about these creatures.

In conclusion, no. There is no compelling evidence to suggest that mermaids are real. Despite this, many people will continue to believe that somewhere out there, mermaids are living beneath the waves. Barnacle Boy: Well, great. Here are the keys. [SpongeBob takes the key from his hand] We'll see you in a week. On land, the green and brown mermaid is Hannah Cadec – or Mermaid Taurva – who lives on a nearby houseboat. She’s a small woman and walks with a dancer’s bounce. There is, however, a telltale piece of seaweed caught in the ends of her hair. “It gets everywhere,” she says. “I’m always finding bits of it in the shower.” The classic tales, ‘The One Thousand and One Nights’ also has legends of ‘sea people.’ Unlike traditional mermaid stories, however, these sea people looked almost identical to humans. In fact, the only difference between sea people and human beings was the ability of sea people to live and breathe underwater. She’s hugely enthusiastic about her monofin. “They’re extremely powerful,” she says. “But at the same time you can glide through the water without disturbing the rest of the environment at all. The experience is completely different; you’re a part of things rather than just an onlooker. The tail is the ultimate connection to the sea.” She describes her experiences swimming with basking sharks, creatures that were over five times her size, and diving off the coast of St Kilda and finding a cave with what looked like a set of underwater manmade steps descending into the depths.
