Painting Skirting Boards the Same Colour as Walls. If you're considering painting your skirting boards the same colour as your walls, it can create a seamless, modern look. However, be sure to use paint that's appropriate for woodwork, which is generally more durable and has a different finish than wall paint. Also, when cutting in it is best to paint in short bursts and adding just a little paint to the brush each time. This helps to paint straight lines more easily and keep the finish looking professional. Don't squeeze the brush against the surface as this can lead to paint drips - use a light touch and keep a steady hand! Using Masking Tape Drying Time: Allow sufficient time for the first coat to dry. Refer to the manufacturer's guidelines for specific drying times. Paint (read this article on the best types of paint for interior woodwork if you’re not sure which type to use) So, should skirting boards be gloss or satin? It largely depends on your aesthetic preferences and the room's usage. Gloss is often chosen for its reflective qualities, while satin offers a more understated elegance. If you're torn between satin and eggshell, consider the room's lighting and how much wear and tear the skirting boards will endure. Eggshell is often considered better for less frequented rooms due to its subtler sheen. Recommended Products and BrandsGrab some medium to fine-grade sandpaper (P120 (UK) is good) and start sanding along the skirting board. Go with the grain, not against it. You also need a dust sheet to cover and protect the rest of the carpet. You can either a) lay the dust sheet on the carpet next to the skirting board and apply the masking tape to it, or b) lay the dush sheet on the floor after you’ve applied the masking tape making sure there’s no gap between the tape and dust sheet.
