Frankly, as I know ZL to be a Christian I was worried that this was going to be dripping with thought terminating clichés, but I am pleased to tell you it was not. Before you climb a mountain, you need to be clear on where the summit actually is, so that you don’t climb the wrong mountain. Many people have misunderstood Jesus’ words here and thus have headed toward the wrong summit. For example, some have taken Jesus to be teaching pacifism, both on a personal and governmental level. Others have used Jesus’ words to advocate indiscriminately giving to anyone who makes a request. I read of a university student who gave everything he had to help several alcoholics who asked him for money. He went without food and went bankrupt because he thought he was obeying Jesus’ teaching here.

At first, I thought that this was going to be an interesting exploration of the necessity for “radicals” within challenging societal parameters (for legality and morality aren't always congruent) - if social commentary has one fan, it is me, if it has no fans, I am dead. Don’t get me wrong, many important themes were dissected, albeit through the lens of a capricious narrator: sexuality, gender and race relations to name a few. This stunning collection showcases the love poetry and mystical teachings at the heart of the Islamic tradition in accurate and poetic original translations

Jesus assumes that His followers will have enemies. He has just stated that His disciples are blessed when men hate them, ostracize them, heap insults on them, and spurn their names as evil for His sake (6:22). We shouldn’t have enemies because of our obnoxious or insensitive behavior. But if we live righteously and hold firmly to God’s truth, we will have enemies in this evil world. Our lives will convict sinners who will try to bring us down so that they can justify their own sins. But we must respond to all mistreatment by actively loving those who wrong us, never by retaliating. How were the portraits received? It included his cognizance of facing the consequences of it. At first, it didn’t help him, perhaps hardened further by the cruelty and ruthlessness of his deeds seemed like he wasn’t eager to seek forgiveness.

The book meanders a bit and the language is atrocious. Where the book shines is when he is just telling the story without side commentary. I can appreciate the vulnerability it took to share his life like this, and I applaud him for doing so. The book is not linear and so it gets repetitive occasionally. In Matthew 5:11–12, he is again talking about being persecuted, just like he was when he said in Matthew 5:44, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” What is remarkable about these verses is that Jesus says that you are able not only to endure the mistreatment of the enemy, but rejoice in it. “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you. . . . Rejoice and be glad.” Her pathway to forgiveness through giving talks made her discover that it was restorative justice she was doing – the restoration of her healing as a victim and the reformation of the offender. Right away, he talks about how privileged he is and how he understands the messed up situation that is the mental health system and access to proper resources. However, you don't get Levi's story without his access to these things he is privileged to afford. You don't get his journey. So, yes, there is a lot of talk about medication and therapy and mental wellness 'retreats', but Levi has a platform to talk about his journey and the help he received and the things he learned, and I am beyond thankful to him for being vulnerable to share that with us. Yes, he is famous, yes, he knows it (even if he doesn't believe he's worthy of the 'big shot' title, because to many people (me included) he is), and yes, he has enough of a platform to relate things we all struggle with. Incredulous of the act, Michael thought Cherry Pie was out of her mind. At some point in the docu, he said he didn’t expect her to forgive him after what he did to the family matriarch.

I'm always a bit wary of celebrity memoirs because I'm not sure I want to know all the details of their dirty laundry. But this book is about so much more than Zachary Levi's life. While it includes a lot more swear words than I expected, I appreciate Zach's honest approach about mental health in both his own life and in opening up the conversation, trying to make it normal to talk about mental health without all the stigmas surrounding it. The things he has to say to provide encouragement to those struggling with similar issues is moving and heartfelt and empowering. I definitely didn't listen to this audiobook with dry eyes. It’s called radical love because it is uncommon or not easy to do and give. It’s radical. Pie’s journey was difficult. It is difficult to continue to love somebody who has hurt her and her loved one so much. Jesus gives us further direction: “Pray for those who mistreat you.” He doesn’t mean to pray the imprecatory psalms! He means to pray sincerely for their well-being, which probably includes their conversion to Christ. You can rest assured that if the person does not repent, God will bring His righteous judgment upon him in due time. But rather than feeling sorry for yourself because you have been mistreated, feel compassion for this sinner who is headed for hell, if God does not intervene. Pray that God would be merciful in saving the person for His glory. Then Jesus gives His well known “turn the other cheek” teaching. This often has been wrongly interpreted to mean that a Christian should never defend himself against aggression. It also has been used to argue that believers should not join the military or the police force. But Jesus was not talking about governmental force. Scripture gives governments the right to bear the sword against evil doers (Rom. 13:1-4). When soldiers asked John the Baptist what they should do to repent, he did not tell them to get out of the military, but rather not to use force wrongfully (3:14). So Jesus’ teaching does not apply on that level.Heather Dewey-Hagborg: Years before I met Chelsea, I started developing this process of creating portraits of people from abandoned DNA. Great on audio read by the author himself and HIGHLY recommended for anyone who's ever had mental health challenges (and I mean honestly, who among us hasn't after going through a pandemic!?!?).
