About this deal

Palate: On the front palate, a very brief berry note leads off the front and the flavor transitions to caramel and toasted nut notes. In the mid-palate, the caramel note drops off and seasoned oak and caramelized sugar lead into a light cream and seasoned oak finish. Final Thoughts and Score/Buy A Bottle: Score: 88/100 Carbon copy of the aroma with a slight addition of some grainy/farmy notes peeking through towards the end.

Whisky Review: Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style Bourbon

This is a perfectly suitable entry-point whisky. It’s great for mixing but needs a fair bit of ice to work as a sipper. And that’s why we’re starting this ranking with it. Old Forestes knows this is a mixing bourbon, so let’s treat it like that. 13. Old Forester Rye Whisky Brown-Forman Old Forester 1920 and 1910 is the brand’s way to offer consumers the taste of their way through their history. A favorite of bartenders, 100 proof honors the legacy of founder George Garvin Brown, who put his signature on every bottle. And this bourbon is definitely one he would be proud to have his name on today.

I tried this from a retailer in Louisville as well and it had a subtle nose of cherry blossom next to a woody maple syrup that almost felt like it had some of the bark in there next to a nice dose of winter spice. The taste complimented the nose with light florals and plummy fruit next to a touch of cherry syrup-soaked cedar planks and a bushel of dark spices. The mid-palate had a slight dark chocolate-covered espresso bean feel to it that led to a finish that was slightly bitter and full of dark fruit and warm spice.

First a mixture of fine Nussigkeit comes here again and the citrus notes in the form of rather bitter than sour grapefruit, then the Manuka honey, fine toffee and vanilla, cinnamon, anise, nutmeg, some eucalyptus, then again to hazelnut and peanut, as well as beautiful fresh oak, to discover something for a Bourbon, very nice! The Old Forester 1920 and 1910 used a similar mash bill ratio: 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. The taste comes in two main streams with the Old Forester bourbon, both rustic and full-bodied. As first, the sweet and buttery cream caramel, maple, and apricot flavors explode mid-palate. It is no surprise that some may refer to the Old Forester as a grown-up cold chocolate, as you get a lot of cocoa, praline, and dark cherry flavors in the palate.

While the two share an almost similar production process, they have big differences in the aging process because 1910 Old Fine Whisky undergoes second barreling. The richness of the nose carries through to the palate. At 115 proof, it’s a bit hot but not as hot as you’d imagine. After aging, 1920 is bottled at 115 proof (57.5% ABV), while 1910 undergoes secondary maturation before bottling at 93 proof (46.5% ABV). On the nose: Brandied cherries, but also something more serious. I need to really concentrate on this one (which I like) to tease out the individual aromatic nuances. There’s a touch of dried firewood that slowly expands to encompass ground cinnamon, tarragon, and thyme. There’s a momentary whiff of latex that makes me feel slightly quizzical, though this recedes soon enough, returning my focus to those ample, concentrated cherry notes. In total, this gives the sense of being very rich.

Not sure where to start with this historic bourbon? Here’s our Old Forester bourbon review to guide your taste buds. Bottled at 43% alcohol by volume, with an 86 U.S. proof, The Old Forester has an average alcohol content for the bourbon market. Worth noting, the former Old Forester Signature has a 100 proof for 50% abv, while the Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, released first in 2002, has a 95 U.S. proof (for 47.5% abv). The Old Forester Statesman, which has been released as a marketing event along the film Kingsman: The Golden Circle, is also bottled at 95 proof. You can also find a wink to the 1920 -1933 period with the 1920 Prohibition Style Old Forester bourbon, bottled at 115 proof. Where is The Old Forester bourbon made? Nose: Strong cherry and dark fruit notes dominate the nose, and some light notes of caramel and seasoned oak linger underneath. Prohibition Style is our toast to the innovative and enduring spirit of Old Forester” – Campbell Brown, Old Forester President Aging Process & Age Statement When I reviewed Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Knob Creek Single Barrel. Both are nearly cask strength bourbons from historic distillers, Knob Creek from Jim Beam and Old Forester from Brown Forman, that cater to bourbon lovers. Knob Creek Single Barrel is one of my longtime personal favorites and one of the best “values” on the market, while Old Forester 1920 is a newer bourbon from the highly regarded Whiskey Row series, aimed at recreating bourbons from various periods. In this case, the 1920 recreates their bourbons made during Prohibition. Both bottles have been open for over 2 months and I let each glass rest for 20 minutes, so let’s get to the Knob Creek Single Barrel vs Old Forester 1920 comparison.Unless mandatory applicable law provides otherwise, your use of and membership to the Service are exclusively governed by Dutch law. We shall first try to settle any dispute over a dram of whisky. Interesting nose, the alcohol is noticeable, but more through intense heat in the nose than through the typical smell of ethanol, beautiful peanut dipped in toffee comes first, manuka honey, bitter orange, vanilla, cinnamon, hint of anise, grapefruit, but the subtle ostensible peanut is the most exciting We all define success differently. For some, the word conjures images of large houses, luxurious cars, and bank accounts boasting multiple commas. For others (myself included), there’s a more holistic conceptualization encompassing balance, quality of relationships, and an inner feeling of satisfaction for a job well done. In 2014, Old Forester began to release their row series, and each bottle is named after significant years for the brand. 1920 was released earlier than 1910. Knob Creek Single Barrel and Old Forester 1920 are very good yet different bourbons. The chart can’t fully capture it all, but this direct comparison shows that Knob Creek Single Barrel is the superior bourbon for me. It’s an absolute steal.
