About this deal

Most 30 year olds do not have "Did not!-Did too!" arguments. To have this occur in the world the author has created is jarring at best and laughable at worst. I saw the plot twist the moment the revelation occurred (it was dark & I hated it! & not the guilty pleasure, secretly-loving sort of thing! downright hate that I was wondering about lowering my rate, but in general I liked the book, so... let's be fair) Fans of witches and magic, prepare for an enthralling new journey from million-bestselling author Bella Forrest. The Writing Style - After about 50% into the book it stopped bothering me because the plot was engaging but it seriously bothered me until then. It's clumsy and lazy. The suppressor thing is ridiculous. Harley is so OP at this point, I'm not sure the story can even continue once it gets removed, which it sounds like the books are warming up to. Plus, I found myself more invested in Santana and Rafe than Harley and Wade. At least Santana has some gumption, ya know? And her byplay with the djinn (this was an audiobook so I'd butcher his name if I tried to guess the spelling) was a lot of fun. I liked how she doesn't shy away from that side of Rafe. As for Harley and Wade, I mean obviously there's interest there, but it's moving so slowly it's hard to care about it. Especially since it doesn't seem like I have enough of the series to actually see them get together. And on that note...

Harley Merlin - Book Series In Order

There’s a traitor lurking within the Coven. She still yearns to know the secrets contained within her parents’ Grimoire. And there’s also the fact that she might actually have feelings for a certain stubborn, green-eyed dude… I have loved this series and now Finches part is over I liked seeing it from Harleys point of view again she has grown in the time from her story. Now I don’t do well with magic or witches and this well it has both… But… I loved it. I liked Harley from the get go. I liked that she doesn’t know exactly what she is but that she knows she is different and she learned to use it to her advantage. Atlantis has been raised. David is King, Kay’s is under more than your average love spell and the Muppet Babies , both teams, need to work to try and save the day! Also this "elitist" behavior that the MC keeps harping on about, there was no payoff to this supposed characteristic of the magicals' society, something to be seen in Chapter 33, the second-last. I can happily say things aren't being too dragged out, we're starting to learn Katherine's plan, more of Harley's past and we actually meet Katherine. I was worried that we wouldn't see our bad guy and would continue lurking in the shadows forever a looming figure. She's actually pretty fun and I really like her, she's at that point of crazy where she's more annoyed that Harley got her dress dirty. I'm looking forward to Katherine becoming part of the story. It's a good thing I'm an HP fan and am not irritated by parallels happening. Actually, some stuff is an improvement on the HP line.

So far, this book was the absolute BEST of the books Forrest has written in the Harley Merlin/Finch Merlin series. It keeps you hooked in through all the twists and turns (and there are a LOT of those!) and doesn’t leave one hanging at the end. For me, anyway. Someone else might have a different experience. That note was the only thing my parents had left me with, before dropping me off at the orphanage when I was three. I was bounced around from one foster home to another after that. It was rarely a pretty picture, and my father's advice somehow helped me retain my sanity. Even now, as I glided into adulthood, I kept looking at that note for guidance, whenever a part of me wavered. As a foster kind, I always had to "stay safe" and "stay smart", though the two rarely went hand in hand."

Bella Forrest will resume publications in April, starting with Harley Merlin 21: Persie Merlin and the Dying Song. Holly continues to grow in friendship and loyalty to a team of young magicals who are all in their late teens like her. They include Tatyana Vasilisa, Santana Catemaco, Raffe Levi, Astrid Hepler, Dylan Blight, and Wade Crowley, who is Harley’s romantic interest throughout this series. In addition, Garrett Kyteler, who was formerly close friends with Finch before his betrayal of the SDC, is now a member of their team. Up until now, he has been presented as continually acting like a sneering jerk, so it is a difficult transition for the team incorporating him into their midst. I loved the ups and downs, and the book kept my attention. I couldn't tell what was going to happen next! I loved Finch and thought that this was an amazing book to finish the series. This author is amazing!

The first book started with an interesting idea. The second expanded the idea but didn't develop much intrigue. This third book became more implausible with the teens being given an unrealistic assignment considering their skill level. Then it bogs down in the love stories. The whole administrative system and hierarchy inside the coven seems haywire and it's obvious that the writer did not put a lot of thought into it. As I said, lazy writing. That was fantastic! It was so good to read chapters split between Harley and Finch again! I love the bond that has festered between them since their mission on Eris Island and which has only grown stronger as we've gone on through the books, even when the two of them weren't always together. I love their humour which had me laughing out loud at times. Whilst I love them and their motley crew, the same can't be said about that humongous pain in the ass Davin! Honestly as a HP fan I didn't think there'd ever be a character I hated more than Umbridge, but Davin definitely gives her a run for her money! I honestly felt myself sharing Finch's fury at how often that asswipe, as Finch would call him, managed to get the better of them! She meets Wade and through him she finds her place in this world that didn’t make much sense before its starting to. She is learning there is more to her talents than meets the eye and with training she may become better. She is learning about her family, not all of it good but it was more than she had before.

The Persie Merlin series is definitely my favorite series of the 3. I thoroughly enjoyed Harley Merlin and all her adventures, friends and even her enemies. Reading the Finch Merlin stories was sort-of okay, but by the end of that series I was ready to move on. I almost decided not to get Book 18, the first of the Persie Merlin series. So delighted I decided to see what Harley's children were like.

After deciding that this would be the last, in the series, that I wanted to read, this book came along. I loved it. There was everything: villains, new characters, love, hatred, the ridiculous and the horrifying. But mostly, there were all the wonderful characters I have loved from the beginning, Harley, Ward, Finch at his best, Ryanne, and all the rest. All fighting for their world and magic and their coven. In one sense this is the last of the series, but the next book in the series seems to be about the next generation- so, of course, I’ll have to see what they are up to. I experienced this book both in Kindle and audiobook format. The narrator is Amanda Ronconi, who does an excellent job acting out the dialogue for all the various characters, portraying with equal skill male and female voices and various national accents. Harley Merlin used to be in an orphanage. She went from foster home to foster home, but got treated very badly in each one, and also in the schools she went to. Because of her magical abilities and the fact that she was an orphan, people called her a "freak". World-building - There wasn't much to begin with. It's not exactly a radical idea. Secret society, keeping magic from the world for their and its own good. The Harry Potter influence is actually quite heavy, there are scenes which literally feel like a retelling. It's not completely off-putting though. Some of it I even enjoyed.I liked the arcs of all the characters. Finch's as how he was hated in the first book and now is my favourite character. How he grew! Erebus as how he was seen as something scary and on the list of do-not-summon to a sort of friend. When a rogue 19-year-old witch is recruited to help guard an ancient magical Bestiary, a breath-stealing journey begins...
