About this deal

There's only two things I truly love in my life and that's my daughter and Robert McCammon's Matthew Corbett series. Were talking about, quite possibly, the best reading experience I've ever had. It is absolutely immense, but you don't need me to tell you. Wait a second, what do you mean you've never heard of Matthew Corbett??? Surely you jest. Well just in case you're actually being serious, let me enlighten you. This book has a couple of scenes about death and near death where the sensitive reader may be upset, especially with the quality of writing Susan Cooper uses which made me imagine every detail. I also found several words like sh-t, cr-p and d-mn. The King of Shadows traded many of its lighter moments of the earlier novels for the darker tones and tragic moments. In fact, if I had to compare this with anything, it would be with Book #3 Mister Slaughter. And the funny thing is, as bleak as this book gets, it's set in paradise. For an analysis of the conceptual integration network involved in Hamlet’s “mirror held up to nature,” including a discussion of the personification of Virtue at work in the text, see Cook, Shakespearean Neuroplay (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2010). Rich and strange (and kitted out with an eye-catching cover), but stronger in the set pieces than the internal logic.

Keith Oatley, “Simulation of Substance and Shadow: Inner Emotions and Outer Behavior in Shakespeare’s Psychology of Character,” College Literature 33.1 (Winter 2006), 15–33, esp. 29-30. That line always hit me hard. It still does. The five star rating is not solely due to nostalgia: this is a good one. The ending may require more suspension of disbelief now than it did when I was ten, but I'm fine with that. This is a lovely atmospheric story about art and family and escape, and yet somehow, despite being written by Susan Cooper, it seems to be an overlooked title.King of Shadows was adapted for the stage in 2005 and first performed by the New York State Theatre Institute (NYSTI) starring P. J. Verhoest as Nat, David Bunce as Shakespeare, John Romeo as Burbage, and Aaron Marquise as Roper. Todd Oatley, “Simulation of Substance and Shadow,” 22. While I share Oatley’s understanding of fiction as productive, I am unconvinced by the strong simulation claim that readers or spectators simulate the emotional experience of the characters. The writing in this one is once again sublime. There is an excellent origin story of one of the main characters that adds much to the story. Matthew Corbett stays inquisitive as ever, always on the lookout for mysteries to be solved even if it means getting in people’s way. "It was his belief that bereft of curiosity, the mind died, and this was a factor that had kept him inquiring even when the inquiries were met with hostility and even violence; it was simply a fact of life."

The main premise of this eight book, the one about the dependence of rational thought on valid input from the senses and from the brain, is a great one in retrospect, once our young gumshoe arrives at an explanation, but I guess I wanted to see Venice more than to spend an entire book on a lost island. Nat's new life is full of excitement, danger, and the passionate friendship that he has longed for since the tragic death of his parents. But why has he been sent to the past - and is he trapped there forever? An American boy called Nathan Field (who is very creative and intelligent. I love him!) is the main character in this novel. He loves acting and he is very talented. He plays in an acting company of boys (he was chosen to be the member of the company). The boss of the company is Arby. He is the boss, director, teacher and actor of the company (basically he is the only leader in the company). He decides everything about the company and the plays. This is probably my least favorite episode in the series, yet my expectations from this Matthew Corbett historical adventure are so high than even this misfire was quite good when considered as a stand-alone book. Which new readers can do, since each book can be read on its own merits and this particular voyage across the Mediterranean Sea is like a side-quest to the main plot.Lisa Zunshine, “Theory of Mind and Experimental Representations of Fictional Consciousness,” Narrative 11.3 (2003), 270–91, esp. 271. See also Why We Read Fiction: Theory of Mind and the Novel (Columbus: Ohio State University Press, 2006). In the Chorus’ first speech in Henry V he apologizes for the mere actors, the “unraised spirits,” that have dared to tell such an important story. He goes on to argue that perhaps these “ciphers” can be part of an epic story just as the zeros that follow a one can make up a million. Garmadon: If you don't remove the sword, how else will you cut the chains to save your precious little sister? Seems like I waited forever for this one to arrive. In my opinion, Robert McCammon is a master. This installment of the Matthew Corbett series didn't disappoint!Master Class · 2. Green and Gold · 3. The Weekend Drill · 4. Elemental Rider · 5. Blue Lightning · 6. Samurai X-Treme King of Shadows is a fantastic book by an amazing writer, Susan Cooper, an award winning author because of her fabulous ”mystery” books. Matthew Corbett finds himself on a ship towards a place he doesn't want to go in search for someone he doesn't want to find and doing the bidding of someone he doesn't want to follow. But then he reminds himself of Plutarch's words: "Fate leads him who follows it, and drags him who resists." I won’t tell you more as not to give anything away about the plot, suffice it to say it is surprising. This is a great book, not just because I love novels with a lot of plot twists, sincerely, because I enjoy the way Susan Cooper describes every single detail, like, the smells, the views... I just love it! Not much is known about the King's early days, save that he was a talented human magic user who was trained for twenty years by the elf Master Isym in the arcane arts. Fiercely patriotic to his homeland, the Second Illefarn empire, the King was one of the hundred who answered the call by the priest Annaeus to sacrifice himself to become a weapon against Illefarn's enemies: the orc tribes to the north, and Netheril to the east. After he was selected out of all the candidates, the King underwent a 100-day long, extremely painful ritual in which Annaeus merged the man with the Weave. When the ritual had passed, the man had lost all traces of his former self; he was now known as "the Guardian," a perfect weapon with only two goals: to protect Illefarn and destroy its enemies.
