Ian temporarily departed from the series in January 2021. In May 2021, Woodyatt was asked on The One Show about how long his break would last, and he stated it would be about 2022 "the earliest" due to his over commitments in the upcoming months. During 2004, Ian gets acquainted with cafe worker Jane Collins. They soon embark on a passionate relationship that continues onwards going into 2006. He helps her to come to terms with the death of her husband, David Collins from Huntington's disease. Afterwards, she and Ian get engaged as they continue to fall in love with each other. But this is nearly ruined when Ian finds out that Jane had an affair with Phil's brother Grant Mitchell, but in the end he forgives Jane and the pair end up getting married in July 2007.
Ian is the most-married character in EastEnders history, with six marriages to five women: Cindy Williams ( Michelle Collins), Mel Healy ( Tamzin Outhwaite), Laura Dunn ( Hannah Waterman), twice to Jane Collins ( Laurie Brett), and Sharon Watts ( Letitia Dean), and two aborted engagements to Mandy Salter ( Nicola Stapleton) and Denise Fox ( Diane Parish). Ian is the owner of 45 Albert Square, traditionally represented within the series as the family home of the Beale and Fowler family, and in 2020, he bought The Queen Victoria public house for Sharon. Tony Holland and Julia Smith created Ian as one of EastEnders' original characters. Ian went from a market stall worker to a business man owning various business's as he success went on Ian developed more selfish, arrogant and smug in his personality this would often lead Ian clashing with most residents in Albert Square, most notably a feud with Phil Mitchell that developed in the 90's and still ongoing in present day making it one of EastEnders longest serving feuds.
