I finished this fairly recently after having had it recommended to me by several different people and heard it called the 'seminal work of Roman fiction'. The stranger continues his story as they wait for the German aircraft to leave so the train can leave the safety of the tunnel. Near the end of the war he spared the life of a German soldier at the Battle of Marcoing. Like most Great War veterans life was not easy after the war. Billy eventually located Christine and they married. At times he seemed fine, other times troubled. As Adolf Hitler comes to power and hostilities begin between Germany and Britain, a fateful night in the cinema reveals to Billy the seemlying terrible consequences of good deed done years ago. WHEN children’s writer, Michael Morpurgo, was a young middle-class boy growing up in England in the 1940s and 1950s, life seemed very innocent at a time when parents could protect their offspring from the harsh realities of life. The best book I have ever read! And that's something because I'm big on books. No exaggeration it is a truly gripping story of war. And hands down a must read book. I just wanted to write a short review to anyone browsing this book to say that if you haven't read this book already you should already be running towards your local library. Read this book at the first chance chance you get.
