Before starting my testing process, it was important for me to define which qualities distinguish a good waffle maker from a not-so-good one. My experience with this maker was, in a word, delightful. It took just over 4 minutes to heat up and 5 minutes and 40 seconds to cook classic waffle batter on a setting of 6. Once it was fully heated, I sprayed the plates with the same neutral cooking spray I used on the other machines I tested before pouring in 1/2 cup of batter per waffle, per the brand’s instructions. The batter spread evenly across the plate (a fact I noticed and appreciated); after it did so, I closed the top and let the automatic cooking process begin. Five minutes and 40 seconds later, the machine beeped and the LCD screen color changed to let me know that the waffles were ready. I removed them before repeating the process with my second batch; in that time, I observed that the exact temperature of the plates had stayed the same, which made for consistent cooking. And that consistency was proven: The second batch took 5 minutes and 39 seconds to cook—just 1 second less than the original batch. I also noted that the waffles themselves removed easily and smoothly from the maker—and, as I noted above, they were perfectly delicious and just right in terms of texture and flavor. The same was true of the gluten-free waffles. With a beautiful, even golden brown color, tons of fluffiness and none of the graininess that most gluten-free waffles have, they were a gluten-averse cook’s dream come true.
