As the story is presented as a tall tale, there's no need to explain the mechanics behind the food weather or the sudden increase in the foods' size. Without that framing story I would have found the book annoying. Problem: The good food stopped falling and it was replaced by bad food that was too big; the people had to leave Chewandswallow. Still the art was amazing and the story inspired my imagination. Anything is possible in the context of a story. Don't limit those possibilities. The people ate whatever weather was served, and they didn't have to worry about going food shopping. People just carried their utensils with them.

What a fabulously creative book, one that opened little imaginations wide. Wonderful prose, and illustrations that took that imagination for a ride. Tell students that when they are summarizing a story to somebody, they usually do not have the book available to look through as they are talking. Explain that you want them to write and draw their own summary of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs so that they can summarize the story to you and to their family members at home.All in all, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” is a truly brilliant book for children who are food lovers and just loves book about pure imagination! I would recommend this book to children ages five and up since the book might be too lengthy for smaller children and there are some intense scenes with the falling food covering the town that might scare younger children. Explain to students that they are going to read a funny story that has to do with unbelievable weather. Explain that they are going to be summarizing some weather conditions they have never ever seen before! Life for the townspeople was delicious until the weather took a turn for the worse. The food got larger and larger and so did the portions. Chewandswallow was plagued by damaging floods and storms of huge food. The town was a mess and the people feared for their lives.
