Tchaikovsky’s writing is clear and concise while painting an evocative atmosphere of grit, dread, and wonder — one of the book’s primary strengths. Spark of the Rebellion: After Ivarn tries to return secretly to the Gownhall and has to be saved by Shantrov and other students from soldiers, the students fortify the Gownhall Square, the Siblingries strike and begin marching in support of them, and the Vultures use the chaos to loot and burn as much Palleseen property as they can find. Despite the city's refugees, wanderers, murderers, madmen, fanatics and thieves, the catalyst, as always, will be the Anchorwood - that dark grove of trees, that primeval remnant, that portal, when the moon is full, to strange and distant shores.

The Bitter Sisters might be older women, but they are absolutely terrifying in their positions as heads of the Vultures. When the rebellion begins, they even put on armor and carry weapons. Hoist by Her Own Petard: The Bitter Sisters are both killed by the giant centipede they used to feed their prisoners to.But as we get into the swing of things, we see the same faces circling around again and again, and eventually have some chapters told from the same perspective twice, and something begins to emerge. It's nothing so simple as a single narrative, but there are a lot of threads being pulled in complementary directions, and a general movement ripples out to affect all the characters we see, and things begin to happen in Ilmar.

BILL CAPOSSERE, who's been with us since June 2007, lives in Rochester NY, where he is an English adjunct by day and a writer by night. His essays and stories have appeared in Colorado Review, Rosebud, Alaska Quarterly, and other literary journals, along with a few anthologies, and been recognized in the "Notable Essays" section of Best American Essays. His children's work has appeared in several magazines, while his plays have been given stage readings at GEVA Theatre and Bristol Valley Playhouse. When he's not writing, reading, reviewing, or teaching, he can usually be found with his wife and son on the frisbee golf course or the ultimate frisbee field. Hoyst; the Palleseen hangman. A secondary character, one we only see a couple of times, but one of the best in my opinion. He sells to those that are deemed criminals a personalised noose, and shaves them to their preference before they swing.Oppression. Political intrigue. Colonization. Religion. Poverty. Bigotry. Magic. Demons. Worker's rights. Crime. Revolution. Wrongful incarceration. These are all a part of this story by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I’m rating City of Last Chances 6/10 as it features moments of Tchaikovsky‘s brilliance but was hard work in places too. That being said, it was a unique reading experience that I would recommend mostly because I’d be interested to see what other people think of this intriguing book. I’d especially recommend City of Last Chances to readers who enjoyed the sweeping scale, industry, revolution and political turmoil of Joe Abercrombie’s Age of Madness. by commentators, guest bloggers, reviewers, and interviewees are solely their own and do not reflect the opinions of Locus magazine or its staff. Weird Trade Union: Although the Siblingries mostly function like normal unions, the fact that the factories they work in are mostly driven by demons means that they include hellieurs-sorcerers specializing in making contracts with demons-in their ranks.
