About this deal

With an uncanny ability to depict the lives of men and women who rarely register in American literature, Phillips writes stories that lay bare their suffering and joy. Here are the abused and the abandoned, the violent and the passive, the impoverished and the disenfranchised who populate the small towns and rural byways of the country. A patron of the arts reserves his fondest feeling for the one man who wants it least. A stripper, the daughter of a witch, escapes from poverty into another kind of violence. A young girl during the Depression is caught between the love of her crazy father and the no less powerful love of her sorrowful mother. These are great American stories that have earned a privileged place in modern literature. Brilliant show, a 2 hander tests the ability of the actors but they excelled Hardly any set, no music and very few costumes would normally concern me but that simplicity combined with brilliant acting made for a wonderful evening

her intro is class: ‘characters & voices in these stories began in what is real, but became, in fact, dreams. they bear no relation to living persons, except that love or loss lends a reality to what is imagined.’ Jayne Anne Phillips’ writing hangs together, like the monologue of a rapt seer, random bits of the world fused together in the self-willed power of her vision.” Them stars are just holes in the sky after all. And while I’m sleeping in that hot bed everything I ever thought of having falls into em. The narrator of this cryptic tale is a mass murderer mainly interested in targeting females. The story begins with a description of the act of murder from the narrators point of view, and then goes one to recount the murderer's past and consequential source of his obsession—from his childhood spent in an economically depressed mid-1900s Bronx neighborhood to his days spent learning how to operate a variety of powerful weapons with ease in the U.S. military. The reader is treated to Phillips' familiar poetic prose and stream of consciousness narrative in this haunting tale of violent alienation in modern-day America.

Director Robin Herford said, "I have lost count of the number of times I have rehearsed anew cast for this play since I directed the very first pair of actors for its world premiere. Here inthe West End, I change the cast every nine months; a process which I used to view with acertain trepidation but which I now welcome. Actors like to be doing different things anrespond to different challenges and this is a healthy process. To perform a play eight times aweek, for forty weeks, is a daunting challenge. When that play has only two speaking parts, thechallenge is even greater. At the end of forty weeks, the outgoing actors can give the play intothe hands of a new pairing of actors, and this is to give the play a new lease of life. The actorsbring to it their own imaginations and intelligences, as well as their emotional responses to thecharacters and the story." So good, second time seeing this on stage and never fails to amaze me! Acting is amazing, lighting really creates the atmosphere, always so good! First time watching the show and it was unforgettable. Boyfriends favourite show but never seen in this theatre. He didn't stop smiling

Well acted and a great play...Worth seeing. My daughter is reading the book at school and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very well acted with only 2 actors throughout. Important Notes

Jayne Anne Phillips is—quite simply—the best new writer I’ve read in years. She sees through the ordinary It had potential but was very boring and not engaging with the audience it was very pretentious! And me and my partner was very much disappointed as we spent our money giggling away at our own entertainment. The years since 1924 have not been kind to the Fortune Theatre, the 400-odd seat theatre in Russell Street that is dwarfed by its neighbour, the giant Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

Phillips wonderfully catches the tones and gestures in which familial love unexpectedly persists even after altered circumstances have made it impossible to express directly, and the ways in which gown children, while cherishing even an unrewarding freedom, can be caught and hurt and consoled by their vestigial yearning for dependence, safety, a human closeness that usually seems forever lost.” The strength of Phillips' writing is in her amazing way of painting a complete picture with just a few words -- absolutely amazing. This was the first professional play I’ve ever seen and I was in awe! The story was told so well, both actors were phenomenal, and I was satisfyingly spooked!! Very good show however surrounded by schoolchildren who kept talking. Fortunately the theatre staff were able to move us at the interval. Some of the children were removed from the theatre. And it's the concrete that is the problem. Last winter's bad weather has led to the concrete façade becoming pot-marked and eroded, which is why David Blyth, who was upped last month to Property Director of Ambassador Theatre Group, owner of the Fortune, is planning a major renovation of the theatre.
