The experience of working my way through this book over the course of the year has been very positive. Being able to pull out this beautiful volume and take a palate-cleanser for whatever else I have been reading (or doing) has been restorative, even in a year where I have read a lot of contemporary poetry.

There is a companion book of poetry called A Poem for Every Day of the Year, and though I haven’t read the companion yet I do want to mention that the night theme in this book felt appropriate to its content. Many of the poems explore night or death or war; there are a few love poems as well, but in essence this is a darker and perhaps heavier collection than I would expect to find in the companion edition. If you’d rather read something a bit contemplative and grim, this may be the poetry book for you. Allie Esiri’s beautiful gift anthology, A Nursery Rhyme for Every Night of the Year, is a definitive collection of nursery rhymes, with enchanting illustrations by Emily Faccini. I think it’s only right to end this review with my favorite poem of the year (maybe - it’s not easy to decide). For the last year I have been making my way through this lovely big book of poetry. Every night before bed I read a poem. It’s such a great idea. Author Luke Palmer introduces his new book, Play (Firefly Press) about four boys growing up together, the challenges, the friendships, and what hap...Some poems were really enjoyable some were not. There was a good mix of styles and topics. I didn't like the paper this was printed on, very rough, absorbent news paper, not what I want to find in a book. It made me think of cheap toilet paper with a poem a day printed on it, that would probably have made me fit it in to a daily reading. Allie Esiri has put together a really strong collection. The poems match the time of the year with the themes reflecting the seasons and its associated mood. This is especially so during the December part of the book with many festive pieces being used. She has also used many extracts from larger works to give a taste of longer more developed poetry throughout, which I think is very important because many of the major poetical works in the English language are thousands and thousands of lines long. Short poems are more accessible, but longer ones often carry much more with them.

Beautiful collection of poetry. It took me nearly four years to finish, occasionally reading some poems, but I loved this volume and will be looking for something similar to read in the future. Allie Esiri's delightfully eclectic anthology takes you on a poetic journey through every night of the calendar year. A fun book for all the family to enjoy. Tatler A story, if well told, can last a lifetime or longer. Brian Pattern’s poem pays homage to great works of children’s literature that continue to give, and live a life of their own. I won’t say I’ve became a poem lover overnight, but this was a great stepping stone into a world previously unknown.Die Mischung ist unausgeglichen. A friend bought this for me for Christmas last year, and I can honestly say it’s one of the best presents I’ve ever received. It’s introduced me to quite a few poets I never heard of and it has also reacquainted me with some of my all-time favourites. The poems are varied and they tend to match the time of year perfectly. There are special poems for Halloween and Christmas and for the changing of the seasons.

Now, launched in March 2023, we can all recreate that wonderful nostalgia with a new collection of nursery rhymes.
