How would you know which road is taking you – literally – down the right path? The Unexpected Pilgrimage of Harold Fry Album Details". Film Music Reporter. 25 April 2023 . Retrieved 11 May 2023.

This low budget, slow paced drama will have you reaching for your Kleenex tissues and cheering on this ordinary man achieving extraordinary things and renewing your faith in humanity along his journey. A poignant film, which Broadbent shines as much as he ever has. From the people he meets along the way to the affect his decisions have on those he leaves behind. It's a beautiful story of a simple act that one man made to try to bring some meaning and importance to a life that was just originate but full of regret. I thought the characters were a mess, poorly written, especially the wife, I get the sons death is the blame but both seemed to have very little chemistry and the ending for me felt ridiculous, as for the druggie, pointless, the dog was cute though.

However, the plot can sometimes be implausible, and some supporting characters feel underdeveloped. The pacing is often ploddingly slow.

The story might be slight but I found it nonetheless compelling. Both Broadbent and Wilton produce powerful performances and as the film progresses their characters personalities start to make sense. The film is also well made and full of good performances and doesn't feel overlong.a b Wiseman, Andreas (20 July 2023). The cinematography of this film is beautiful - a story full of fleeting moments and what-ifs, and the impact that small actions can have on the people we come across. A life-affirming and thought-provoking movie that will make you want to be a better person. Gently heartfelt acting from a top-flight cast. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce – review, The Guardian 6 April 2012, retrieved 10 March 2014 As he begins the walk—which in 87 days will cover 627 miles—he reflects. About his marriage, his former employment as a brewery representative, about his son David, from whom he is almost completely estranged. From stopping places he sends postcards, to his wife Maureen, to Queenie, and to the unnamed girl at the filling station who gave him inspiration for his journey. But it’s not just about Mr Broadbent, but also Ms Wilton, who starts to feel like she’s been abandoned, as well as getting the impression he’s living the life she wishes she’d led, and there’s wonderful performances from both of them.

But when he at last reaches the hospice where Queenie has been waiting, he decides not to go in, and the reader is told, by means of a confessional letter to the girl at the filling station, of another motive for the walk. His son David, unemployed after Cambridge and addicted to drink and drugs, committed suicide in the garden shed, where he was discovered by the father with whom he barely ever communicated, and whose life is now a protracted mourning. The same letter divulges that when he and Queenie were working as colleagues she had taken the blame for a misdemeanour committed by Harold. "I let her take the blame"(264).
