As soon as I finished the book and I wanted to read her bio and I found out Ms. Hunter’s main job was interventions facilitator in prisons, working at rehabilitation programs to men serving sentences, especially working with prisoners who’d committed serious brutal crimes! Beth’s world is turned upside down when her husband Tom is taken to the police station to help them with a missing person/murder investigation. Keen to keep their daughter Poppy in the dark, Beth struggles to make sense of what she learns. The main narrative is from Beth’s perspective, with occasional contributions by Tom and by Katie, the apparent murder victim, as well as short pieces by an unknown woman who describes encounters with a man (Tom?) who gets off on strangling her. Beth’s behaviour and reactions are slightly off, giving the reader cause to wonder about her protested ignorance. What begins as a party swiftly descends into chaos as the police abruptly interrupt the gathering and apprehend Tom on murder charges. Despite’s Beth’s fervent belief in her husband’s innocence, the unfurling of a life she thought she knew reveals the truth to her: that nothing is ever really as it seems. The premise of this novel had me intrigued immediately and it did not disappoint. This is a fast-moving story that grips you right away - I read it in one day, having to know how it ended.

Soon Beth finds herself swinging between various emotions, wondering how her picture perfect life has been suddenly upturned.

The Serial Killer’s Wife is a pacy and a totally addictive thriller by Alice Hunter. Whenever serial killers are reported on in the news, people often think about the killer’s family. How is it possible that they didn’t know what was going on right under their nose? If they did know, why didn’t they have the courage to come forward and tell the police? It’s what Alice Hunter explores in her novel as she tells it from the point of view of Beth, the wife of the killer, Tom Hardcastle. Beth and their daughter mean everything to Tom. At one time, Beth thought the same about him. But police arrest him following the discovery of new evidence in an old murder case, she begins to question everything she thought she knew. It also puts her in a very uncomfortable position as people begin to look at her in a different light than they did before. Annabel Scholey takes the lead in The Serial Killers Wife cast as Beth Fairchild, on a mission to clear her husband of murder accusations. Scholey’s impressive acting credits include Nina Defoe in the popular BBC1 series The Split and Claire Brown in Doctor Who.Apart from the starry ensemble, the series also features underdogs, including Angela Griffin who is previously known for her roles in Coronation Street, Waterloo Road, Crime: The Suspect and is on set to portray DI Aline Edgeworth, a relentless truth-seeker unafraid of the consequences.
The Serial Killer’s Wife by Alice Hunter - Whispering Stories
For the most part, I will say that I enjoyed it despite seeing the twist a mile away. I found myself still reading along. I was excited for this book, because the blurs sounded super exciting. Unfortunately, imo, this book missed the mark. It might be because I'm a thriller roll rn which makes me more sensitive about books shortcommings. Largely told from Beth’s perspective, we follow her life crumbling down when her husband is arrested on suspicion of a murder that took place several years ago. Police are suspicious of Beth’s naivety and this is something she experiences in her village as people question why she was not aware of Tom’s murderous behaviour. After all, she is his wife, surely she suspected something? As the novel progresses, we learn about Tom’s past in very brief snapshots. So brief, in fact, that I was desperate for Hunter to develop this part of the plot further – I found it so very interesting. However, the focus primarily stays on Beth as she grows to cope with the media frenzy during the police investigations, turning to acquaintances in the village for support for both her and her daughter, Poppy.
The Serial Killer’s Wife Paramount Plus release date is still under wraps, creating suspense among eager viewers. Despite that aspect, this was surprisingly juicy and very easy to read! I enjoyed this and think a fast reader could finish in one sitting. Such an incredible book. Thankyou to Netgalley. Avon books UK and Alice Hunter. I really enjoyed reading this book. The whole book felt rather flat. The premise is wonderful and clever, but the author just didn't pull it off. The Serial Killer's Wife might have earned a whole three stars if it weren't for that final chapter because, despite my comments, there was never a moment where I considered not finishing it. The final chapter was totally extraneous, and totally pointless. Sometimes less is more.

The story unfolds mostly from the POV of Beth as she questions what she does, and doesn’t know about her husband, while trying to protect their 3 year old daughter, Poppy, and keep her ceramic and baked goods cafe afloat. Due to the book title, the reader assumes immediately that the story is about a woman whose husband is a serial killer, but the opening few chapters when we are introduced to Beth and Tom Hardcastle and their cute little toddler daughter Poppy are written in a way that you half hope you are wrong. Easy to read and extremely juicy - this was an excellent read. When Beths husband is taken by the police on suspicion of murder - the small village (and the reader) want to know if she knew and kept it hidden!This is a brilliant story that kept me guessing throughout. I must admit I had my suspicions about halfway through the book, but just couldn’t work out the truth of what happened to the missing ex-girlfriend and whether Beth did know what her husband had done. The book takes the reader on a lot of twists and turns as the evidence mounts up against Tom, whom it transpires has killed more than once, could it be multiple killings, did Beth know? What will happen to Poppy? Beth then finds it is in connection with a murder investigation into a mudding woman who was a former girlfriend if Tom's. Very good character development and could just see a small village being like that which is why I moved to a city.
