The film begins at Royal Ascot. Sir Charles Hare (Terence Morgan) is an Irish baronet who loses his ancestral home and its racing stables after someone fixes a race that Hare has gambled on. Forced to sell his estate, he decides to stay on when the new American owner's attractive daughter Pat (Peggy Cummins) mistakes him for a groom. The March Hare briefly appears in Through the Looking-Glass as one of the two messengers that The White King uses for "coming" and "going." In this incarnation, he goes by the name of "Haigha" (which Carroll explains as rhyming with "mayor") and is famously recognizable by his 'Anglo-Saxon attitudes.' The dramatic personae for Through the Looking-Glass designates the Hare as being a white pawn. The Hare usually looks a little ridiculous in film versions of the Alice as he is most often played by a man in a hare costume, with large floppy ears and false teeth. And although the Hare usually plays second fiddle to the Hatter in these scenes, there are several versions where his contribution to the scene is subtle but quite important. For without the Hare, there can be no banter, which is certainly part of what makes the Mad Tea Party so fun to watch. Here are a few of the more interesting portrayals of the March Hare from Disney’s 1951 version (voiced by vaudeville comedian Jerry Colonna), the stuttering and stoic Hare in Jonathan Miller’s 1966 film, the stop-animation wind-up Hare of Jan Svankmajer’s “Alice,” and finally the seriously deranged March Hare of Tim Burton’s 2010 film. Additionally, I’ve included a clip from the early 1990’s television series “Adventures in Wonderland,” for its interesting iteration of the March Hare. The March Hare - Rotten Tomatoes

We jump two years to a racecourse where Peggy discovers Sir Charles's true identity and "The March Hare" only manages to race after Mangan calms the horse using fairy words. Hare and Pat go for a date in London. After Mangan falls ill, he becomes teetotal, which restores his health but means he can no longer remember the fairy words. A frequently villainous onscreen presence throughout the 1950s, Terence Morgan takes the more endearing role of an impoverished Irish baronet in this charming comedy set in the deceptively genteel world of horseracing. Co-scripted by Oscar-nominated writer Gordon Wellesley and boasting a venerable supporting cast, The March Hare is featured here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.
