In Partnership with St Martin-in-the-Fields. This series of nine lectures is inspired by the words of Martin Luther during the Reformation. Distinguished speakers investigate those things in which we believe deeply – and for which we would be prepared to make a costly stand. There are parts of the book I'll take away and use and other parts not so much, the laws are broken down to their absolute basic form and are not particularly detailed in evidence but do have a story of their application.

As a success coach, I'm always on the lookout for resources that offer insights and practical wisdom to benefit my clients and myself. Steven’s book did not disappoint. Steven does an excellent job of sharing information from those that he has interviewed, but it's interspersed with his own reflections, learnings from his own entrepreneurship, and his practice. Each lesson is fairly short, but it is not simplified or shortened to the point of being too simplistic. Use it: When you feel pressure, stress becomes a tool you can use to succeed. To give something your best, you need stress.

Steven Bartlett - About

Groupthink bias: Sometimes people don’t want to ask “Why is this a bad idea?” because they don’t want to express a different opinion to that of the group. These fundamental laws underpinned my meteoric rise, and they will fuel yours too, whether you want to build something great or become someone great. The laws are rooted in psychology and behavioral science, in my own experiences, and those of the world's most successful entrepreneurs, entertainers, artists, writers, and athletes, who I’ve interviewed on my podcast.Mental toughness is one of the best qualities you can cultivate. Physical strength, intelligence, and leadership matter, but without perseverance, you might never achieve long-term goals. Your self-story is the most important factor when it comes to your goals both personally and professionally.

Sometimes the biggest cost isn’t implementing something new and failing, it’s missing a big opportunity. Most ideas that fail are reversible and inexpensive. When it comes to making decisions, having 51 percent certainty should be enough to go ahead. Big decisions are rarely a matter of having 100 percent certainty. Perfect decisions only exist in hindsight. Indecision costs you one of your most expensive resources, time. They are rooted in psychology and behavioral science, are based on the wisdom of tens of thousands of people I've surveyed across every continent and age group, and of course, drawn from the conversations I've had on my chart-topping podcast with the world's most successful people.

Known for his innovative and disruptive approach to social media marketing, Steven co-founded Flight Story - a marketing and communications company that works with leading brands. He has also launched his own private equity fund, Flight Fund, to accelerate the next generation of European unicorns. It is full of valuable principles and actionable strategies for personal and professional growth. Each “law” is strategically written so it can be applied in a way to achieve greater success. I have found myself integrating many of the concepts from this book into my coaching sessions, it has become a great tool for me. Brainstorm reasons for failure: Write a list of reasons that could have led to failure. Everyone must do this individually to avoid groupthink bias.

Share it: Connecting with people you love when you’re under stress can help you diminish its negative consequences. You’ll never get rid of pressure entirely, but you can change how you feel about it. By changing your reactions to stress, you can capture its creative power and lessen its harmful effects. With this in mind, the author proposes a four-step process. Fast-forward to failure: encourage everyone to visualize a future where the project in question failed. The Ostrich effect is a behavioral phenomenon. When in danger, the ostrich hides its head in the sand. In dangerous situations, people behave similarly. We do this to avoid unpleasant situations, but reality will soon catch up to us. As painful as it is, confront reality in all aspects of your personal and professional life. I was speaking with a colleague of mine and Steven Bartlett's name came up. She explained she follows his podcast religiously and loves the words of wisdom he imparts. Having read this book, I am also a convert. IN THE midst of a chaotic geo-political and ethical crisis, it feels, at best, futile and, at worst, glib to be pondering abstract moral questions. From those questions that might evince something vaguely helpful, The Moral Maze (Radio 4, Wednesday of last week) chose one with promise: “How should we think about our enemies?”— a question that encompasses that proxy war fought between battalions of social-media commentators. But it was too early for some to be pondering such niceties. Righteous rage and justified violence were on the lips, and this was not the time to offer philosophical dialectic. Sunk-cost fallacy bias: This is when we stand by a decision because we’ve spent time and money on it. Moving on implies losing the time and money we’ve invested in it. Pillar III: The Philosophy– The philosophy includes your beliefs, values, or principles that guide you in life.
